  • Patent number: 4790864
Abstract: A compact combination engine air cleaner/noise deadener for installation in the engine compartment of a motor vehicle type engine includes a two piece plastic elongated housing that is compact and has an ambient air inlet at one end radially spaced from an air outlet to the engine located on the axis of the housing, the inlet containing a first noise attenuating venturi, the housing having an air filter at the other end connected to the venturi and discharging air into a second convergent-divergent flow control noise attenuating venturi with which is integrated a mass air flow sensor, the venturis being surrounded by a dead air space type resonating chamber that has an inlet concentric with the air outlet so that engine feedback noises and sound waves are trapped in the chamber and dissipated, and any sound waves passing serially into the venturis bounce off the walls of the venturi diffusers to also be dissipated, thus minimizing the transmission of engine feedback noises past the air cleaner.

  • Patent number: 4771747
Abstract: Rigidifying or structural members are used to increase structural stiffness of cylinder block and consequently have reduced vibrations and noise emitted therefrom. These devices in the past have reduced serviceability, increased engine component complexity, increased cost and allowed additional interfaces for lubricant to leak therefrom. The subject structural member or rigidifying member provides a simple, inexpensive, light-weight solution to increasing structural stiffness of cylinder block. The subject structural member has an uninterrupted flange therearound and a plurality of equally spaced longitudinally positioned openings therethrough. The flange is secured in frictional contact with the inner mounting surface inside the oil pan. Thus, the interface for lubrication leakage of past members has been eliminated. The openings have reduced the weight of the member and provide an opening through which the crankshaft can swing preventing the need to increase the engine height.

  • Patent number: 4715335
Abstract: There is disclosed an internal combustion engine with reduced emission of sound, heat and harmful substances. The characteristics of an air-cooled engine are optimized as a result of withdrawal of heat by oil in uniform distribution along the entire peripheries of the cylinders. For this purpose, there was developed a lower piston portion which effects uniform distribution of cooling oil along the periphery. The external cooling is improved in that the entire periphery of each free-standing cylinder is provided with a recessed ring-shaped oil guide and in that the free-standing cylinders are located in a common chamber which is cooled by oil sprays. More pronounced uniformity of such cooling action along the entire periphery of each cylinder allows for the selection of a higher temperature level of the cylinders which is important for combustion of vegetable oils in lieu of mineral oil products.

Abstract: An oil sump 1 of an internal combustion engine has a recess 3, into which dips a suction funel 5 of an oil pump. The funnel is spaced slightly from the oil sump floor 7. A honeycomb-shaped insert 8 is positioned in the recess 3 at a slight spacing from the oil sump floor 7. The height b of the insert 8 amounts to a multiple of the spacing a from the oil sump floor and also a multiple of the side length c of the substantially square cross-section of the chambers 11 of the insert 8. As a result, the oil flowing back from the engine, which is strongly foamed with air because of the rotating motion of the crankshaft drive, can become de-foamed in the relatively high chambers 11, whereby the oil foam in the chambers 11 rises and air-free oil in the chambers drops down to the oil sump floor 7. This ensures that the oil pump, which is pumping out from the oil sump floor 7, essentially draws in air-free oil.

Said air cleaner comprises openings for communicating with atmosphere provided along a peripheral portion surrounding a suction chamber communicating with a suction port of a carburetor, a filter to cover said openings, a suction path formed along the inside of said openings, a partition wall provided to separate said suction path and said suction chamber, and a communicating path to provide communication between said suction path and said suction chamber so that the suction sound of the engine is prevented by said partition wall from propagating directly to atmosphere and reduced due to interference caused when passing through the long suction path which is located inside the filter, without reducing the area of the path through which suction air passes.

  • Patent number: 4606547
Abstract: Two components of the housing of a centrifugal pump have adjoining surfaces and define an opening for an annular insert which surrounds a rotary shaft. The insert is surrounded by a sealing ring which is biased into sealing engagement with the peripheral surface of the insert and against the adjacent internal stops of the two components by a two-piece ring under the action of screws which mate with the insert and are caused to urge the two-piece ring against the sealing ring. The adjoining surfaces of the two components are grooved at the opposite sides of the insert and receive rope-like sealing members which are in sealing contact with the adjoining surfaces of the two components under the action of bolts which urge the two components toward each other. The sealing ring has recesses which sealingly receive the adjacent end portions of the sealing members.

  • Patent number: 4577713
Abstract: An automotive engine oil drip pan assembly comprises a pan containing a pad which has a preference for absorbing oil over water. The pan is constructed with a depression forming a locator for the pad. The assembly mounts on an automotive engine and powertrain combination with the pan disposed directly below the bell housing area so as to catch and collect oil which may leak through the engine rear bearing and seal. The pad is provided with a recess forming a collection volume for oil which drains through an opening in certain engine and powertrain models. The pan is suspended by means of flexible cords from brackets which are attached to the engine through the use of pre-existing fasteners used to fasten the powertrain's engine. Releasable fasteners are also used to provide for release of the pan assembly for replacement of a used pad.
