Patent number: 6770825Abstract: The present invention is a reinforced connection between a distributor body and a distributor cap. The distributor cap rests on the distributor body as in the conventional arrangements. However, an additional clamp is provided to mount over the interface between the distributor cap and distributor sandwiching the components there between. A screw/bolt passes through the clamp and through both the cap and distributor body and engages a threaded portion of the clamp. By simply tightening the screw/bolt, the cap and distributor are clamped together without inducing concentrated stresses in the distributor body. The clamp may be used in a retrofit application to strengthen the existing connection between the cap and distributor body, repair the connection in a cracked or otherwise damaged distributor, or installed as part of an original equipment design.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 2003Date of Patent: August 3, 2004Assignee: Standard Motor Products, Inc.Inventors: George Hildebrand, Jack McLeod

Publication number: 20040084036Abstract: Internal combustion engine (ICE) on-plug ignition coils with transistor drivers located in powertrain control modules (PCM) or other remote locations are prone to high electrical and magnetic interference (EMI) emissions and are subject to interference from other components due to long connecting wires. Ionization detection circuits have even greater sensitivity to EMI because of their very low signal current levels (microampere). The present feature of the invention integrates both the coil driver transistor and ionization detection circuits into the on-plug ignition coil. In a preferred embodiment, parts rated at 140 degrees centigrade are used in both the coil driver transistor and the ionization circuits which are located on the coil to address temperature and thermal shock concerns. Additionally, parts rated at 20 G are used in both the coil driver transistor and the ionization circuits to address vibration concerns.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 11, 2003Publication date: May 6, 2004Inventors: David L. Patent number: 5927259Abstract: An ignition coil has a stress absorbing member with a coefficient of linear expansion which is smaller than a coefficient of linear expansion of a potting resin. The stress absorbing member faces along a circuit element of a mold ignition circuit and is buried in the potting resin. Thus, stress, caused by temperature change, which is applied to the circuit element of the mold ignition circuit from the potting resin can be reduced by the stress absorbing member. Therefore, peeling at a bonding portion of the circuit elements or at the crack can be prevented. Furthermore, the stress absorbing member is only facing along the circuit element mounting surface, and the mold ignition circuit is not wrapped by the stress absorbing member. Therefore, heat radiation from the mold ignition circuit is not suppressed by the stress absorbing member. The radiation performance of the ignition apparatus is thus improved, and the durability and credibility of the ignition circuit is improved.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 1998Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Denso CorporationInventors: Koji Ando, Noboru Nagase, Yasuo Tsuzuki

Patent number: 5794603Abstract: An ignition coil device is provided in which a damaged portion can be exchanged and which requires no connector for connecting a power switch with a wiring harness. Since an ignition coil device 2 is constructed such that a primary coil portion 21 and a power switch 22 are secured by fitting the primary coil portion 21 into a hollow core of a secondary coil portion 23 mounted in advance on an engine 30, the primary and secondary coil portions 21, 23 can be detachably connected via an iron core 21c as a magnetic core. Accordingly, only the secondary coil portion 23 having a relatively short life due to the generation of varying high voltage can be easily exchanged. Further, since the power switch 22 and the primary coil portion 21 are integrally or unitarily connected with a wiring harness 40, the construction can be made inexpensive and simple by the deletion of a connector provided in a prior art ignition coil device, thereby enhancing electrical reliability.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1997Date of Patent: August 18, 1998Assignee: Sumitomo Wiring Systems, Ltd.Inventor: Masao Miyamoto

Patent number: 5602714Abstract: The purpose of the present invention is to obtain a low-cost and easy-to-produce ignition coil for an internal combustion engine.A lead wire 13a of an electronic part 13 is connected to a terminal 12a and a terminal 7a of an intermediate conductor 12 by means of caulking or press fitting. Since the end cut face of the lead wire 13a of the electronic part 13 is sharp, a wall material 71 and a cover 81 as crack spread preventing materials are arranged so as to encircle that end cut face. Further, an opening portion 92 is closed by the intermediate conductor 12, and high voltage is output via a spring 11 directly contacted to the intermediate conductor 12.The number of components may thus be reduced, and cracks generating in an insulating resin may be prevented from spreading.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1995Date of Patent: February 11, 1997Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Takeshi Shimizu, Takafumi Narishige
