Patent number: 6827076Abstract: A quick start barbecue comprises a kettle, column and base. A moveable charcoal grate, when lowered into the column, folds into a basket shape thereby holding the charcoal in a compact configuration ideal for starting. Once the charcoal has ignited the grate is lifted into the kettle and in the process unfolds into a flat shape with the charcoal evenly distributed in a configuration ideal for cooking. The charcoal may be started using crumpled newspaper placed below the charcoal grate in its lower “basket” position or by use of a self igniting propane torch removably affixed to the column. A long chimney may be placed in the kettle to aid starting and stored around the column. A removable ash drawer in the base makes cleanup easy. Removal of the ash drawer causes a gate to close so that excess ash is confined to the column while the drawer is out.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2003Date of Patent: December 7, 2004Assignee: Original Ideas Inc.Inventors: Alan D. Patent number: 5617841Abstract: Stoves fueled by biomass pellets are provided with a grate assembly that supports the pellets for combustion and directs combustion gas into the fire. The grate assembly includes a passive grate of equally or unequally spaced rods. The design of the rods serves to prevent the ash and clinkers from accumulating on the grate in mounts that could reduce the flow of combustion gas into the fire. In one embodiment, an ignitor rod is provided as one of the spaced rods in the grate assembly. By applying power to the ignitor rod, the rod is raised to a sufficient temperature to ignite unburned biomass pellets in proximity to the ignitor rod.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Pyro Industries, Inc.Inventors: Oliver J. Patent number: 5154159Abstract: A portable barbecue cooker for use without solvent ignition means or impregnated charcoal briquets. A turbo air blower communicates with ignited briquets through a distributive port plenum chamber and brings ignited briquets to operating temperature rapidly. A vertically and rotationally movable elevator brings the briquets, at operating temperature, to the char grill, and by conveying rotary movement to the char grill, distributes the briquets evenly thereupon. The elevator engages the char grill for vertical movement and for variable spacing with respect to the cook grill. The char grill is equipped with a support cage and plough blades which rotate with the char grill to move ashes from the cooker bowl bottom for transport to an ash collector. Either paper kindling or piezoelectric means provide initial ignition for the briquets in an ignition chamber.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1991Date of Patent: October 13, 1992Assignee: The Clorox CompanyInventors: Frank M.
