  • Patent number: 8973758
Abstract: An ash basket can act as a sieve or strainer, allowing a user to lift out the charcoal from a kamado grill, clean out the ash, and place the ash basket back into the grill for future use. The ash basket retains larger pieces of charcoal that can be reused, while allowing the ash to pass through to a bottom plate of the grill. The bottom plate has openings to permit the ash to fall to an ash collection chamber. Without the ash basket, pieces of charcoal can block the openings in the bottom plate, making ash collection difficult. Moreover, with the openings blocked, proper air flow through the openings. Finally, the ash basket creates and additional air space that covers the entire surface of the interior walls by separating the ash from the wall, improving air flow, which is critical to the kamado grill design.

  • Patent number: 6659285
Abstract: A tool for separating coals from ash, includes and elongated body having a handle at one end and a plurality of substantially parallel spaced-apart first fingers longitudinally disposed along the body at an opposite second end. The first fingers form a curved shovel-like structure which outwardly projects substantially perpendicular to the body. The distal ends of the first fingers are connected by a cross member. A plurality of substantially parallel spaced-apart second fingers are longitudinally disposed along the body on the opposite side from the first fingers. The second fingers form a tapered rake configuration. The tool is used to (1) push a coal/ash mixture to one area of a fire box, (2) sift the coals from the ash, (3) flip the separated coals to a second area of the fire box, (4) rake coals from the coal/ash pile, and (5) drag coals from the top surface of the coal/ash pile.

  • Patent number: 5137010
Abstract: Stoves fueled by biomass pellets are provided with a grate assembly that supports the pellets for combustion and directs combustion gas into the fire. The grate assembly includes a passive grate and a moveable elongate blade spaced above the upper surface of the grate to direct ash and clinkers through a plurality of elongate slots in the grate. The design of the planar plate and the movement of the blade serves to prevent the ash and clinkers from accumulating on the grate in amounts that could block the elongate slots and reduce the flow of combustion gas into the fire.
