  • Patent number: 6009867
Abstract: A charcoal igniter which has a thermal barrier attached to the top of the charcoal ignition chamber. The thermal barrier restricts airflow though the charcoal chamber and retains heat within the chamber to accelerate the burning process. The thermal barrier is perforated to allow air to flow through at a reduced rate to retain hot gas from ignition within the charcoal chamber. The thermal barrier may contain thermally resistive material, such as granulated or crushed lava roc which both retains heat to accelerate the ignition and improves safety by filtering exhaust gases to prevent ash and sparks from escaping. The thermally resistive material also acts to re-radiate heat back into the charcoal chamber to further accelerate the ignition of the charcoal. The charcoal igniter has a central charcoal chamber to hold charcoal and a top mounted thermal barrier to prevent heat from escaping.

  • Patent number: 5743248
Abstract: A portable, fused essentially waterproof campfire is presented. The campfire has a trapezoidal cross-section with kindling, a firestick and a fuse located near the bottom center of the trapezoid. The fuse runs from the firestick to the outside of the campfire. Surrounding the firestick and kindling are increasingly larger sizes of wood, ranging from one inch in diameter to approximately 5 inches in diameter at the top. The campfire, once constructed, is entirely surrounded by a clear combustible material such as shrink wrap and a handle is attached. The shrink wrap not only keeps the campfire in its trapezoidal shape, it also keeps water from penetrating. The campfire is highly portable and easily started even under damp conditions. One simply lights the fuse, which ignites the firestick and kindling and the rest of the fire.

  • Patent number: 5074279
Abstract: A draft controller for use with a combustible solid fuel comprises an elongated band of heat-resistant material such as sheet metal which can be flexed so that attachment devices provided on the ends of the band can be interengaged to provide an open-topped container of adjustable size and which can then be disposed on a fuel-supporting surface, for example, within a barbecue, to confine the fuel to a limited area. Or, the ends of the band can be left open to confine the fuel in a broader, shallower area. In one embodiment, the flow of combustion air to and across the top surface of the burning fuel can be controlled by forming the band with a width which varies between its two ends. In another embodiment, air flow openings are provided in the band of different sizes and/or spacings. In both embodiments, the position of the container so formed can be rotationally adjusted to optimize combustion and top surface burning of the fuel having regard to the strength of the wind.

  • Patent number: 5033454
Abstract: In accordance with the invention, a fireplace starting apparatus is provided which includes a control valve for controlling the flow of flammable gas to a fireplace burner, with said control valve being adapted for permanent installation in a structure external of and adjacent to a fireplace. Said apparatus includes a conduit connectable at one end to a fireplace burner within the fireplace and at the other end to the control valve. In one embodiment, the device may be provided with a remotely operable ignition/reignition device including an igniter mountable adjacent the burner within the fire box, an actuator located adjacent to the control valve and means operably connecting the actuator to the igniter. A sensor adjacent to the igniter may detect the absence of a flame and cause the igniter to light the gas flame upon startup and also during operation of the gas flame is extinguished while the gas is still flowing.

  • Patent number: 4953533
Abstract: A combustible package for purposes of outdoor cooking and barbecuing is disclosed. The combustible package consists of an octagonally-shaped platform, a centrally located chimney, a wall attached along the platform's perimeter, a plurality of legs, and an igniter. The platform has a central aperture which is contiguous with the chimney, a plurality of secondary apertures uniformly located between the central aperture and the platform's perimeter, and a plurality of peripheral apertures. The wall is composed of an inner and outer wall portion which form a peripheral air space around the platform's entire perimeter. The peripheral air space is in communication with the peripheral apertures. When placed below the platform and ignited, the igniter produces hot combustion gases which flow through the central aperture and chimney, the secondary apertures, and the peripheral apertures and air space, thereby uniformly and rapidly heating the charcoal for more uniform burning.

  • Patent number: 4909237
Abstract: A portable charcoal maker is disclosed for home use. The charcoal maker can also be used to start ordinary charcoal briquettes as well. The device consists of a tapered housing having a large cylindrical hopper placed on the top of the tapered housing. The device has a flared base for support. The junction of the flared base and the tapered housing forms a venturi that will accelerate the flow of air through the device. Up to two additional venturis can be added to the device by forming restrictions in the walls of the device. The additional venturis produce variable air pressures through the device which produce a high efficiency for combustion. Ordinary charcoal placed within the hopper will start and be ready for cooking in six to seven minutes, using only four pieces of newspaper to ignite the charcoal. To make charcoal, wood block are placed in the device and ignited.

  • Patent number: 4903683
Abstract: A system, including apparatus and methods, which facilitates the use of dutch ovens, usually combined with a charcoal heating source, in outdoor cooking. The first apparatus is a safe, independent, time-efficient device which quickly preheats charcoal briquettes contained in a portable hopper, accomplishing the same by means of a self-contained, transportable, propane-fueled burner. A second apparatus is a sturdy, portable cooking stand, which, in the "as used" position, provides a safe, elevated site whereupon the charcoal heating source and a plurality of dutch ovens can be conveniently placed for cooking purposes, and which, in the "as transported" position, is disassembled and may be carried facilely to more desired locations. The third apparatus is a T-handled dutch oven and dutch oven lid lifting device whereby said ovens and/or lids may be conveniently and safely removed from and replaced on the heating source.

  • Patent number: 4793320
Abstract: A fuel combustion apparatus. A base member having side walls which extend generally upwardly therefrom to intersect into a cap member form a container for housing charcoal fuel particles. Charcoal fuel particles are stacked in an overlying relationship within the interior chamber of the container. The interior lining of the chamber is treated with paraffin and a mixture of potassium chlorate. The container is ignited at the base to initiate combustion of the charcoal fuel particles therein. The charcoal fuel particles may also be treated with a flammable petroleum product. Vent holes are placed in the cap member to facilitate air flow within the chamber, and also provided a convenient handle for transport and handling of the apparatus. In an alternative embodiment, the cap member may also be removed to permit access to charcoal particles within the container chamber.
