  • Patent number: 8869788
Abstract: The present disclosure provides woodstoves that, optionally, produce low emissions. In certain embodiments, the woodstove includes a housing, a firebox disposed in the housing, an air regulator and a secondary air pipe. The air regulator includes a primary air aperture configured to supply primary air to a fire located in the firebox, a plurality of secondary air apertures configured to supply secondary air to a combustible gas emitted by the fire, and a secondary air damper. The present disclosure also provides methods of operating such a woodstove. As measured according to Method 28 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the weighted average emission rate of the woodstove of certain embodiments of the invention is no greater than about 4.5 grams of particulate emissions per hour.

  • Publication number: 20090293860
Abstract: Fireplaces suitable for outdoor patio and built-in fireplaces, fire pits and the like that burn biomass solid particulate fuels wherein such fireplaces comprise at least one feed system that is modular which can feed from at least one feed bin onto one or more burn grates. This allows for greater control over aspects such as heat output, energy generation, mixing different varieties of fuels such as flavored pellets or chips when used in a barbecue grill or smoker or other food preparation device, and if desired a wider, more full flame for example where aesthetic considerations are important.

  • Publication number: 20090242653
Abstract: An integrated air flow induction system for heating a building is provided, the system comprising a centrally located fireplace hearth assembly and wall and floor beam sections defining hollow channels therethrough. The hollow channels are configured to return air back to the fireplace. The fireplace comprises a fire box, the fire box configured to retain a fire therein and further configured to receive returned air from the hollow channels, such that the returned air is heated. A plenum, located below the fire box, is configured to receive the returned air from the hollow channels. A fan, located between the fire box and the plenum, is configured to direct the returned air received by the plenum through the fire box, such that the air is heated by the fire box and dispersed throughout the building.

  • Patent number: 6951241
Abstract: A method of cooling the bearings of a motor in a motor housing for a furnace assembly is disclosed comprising an aperture in the motor housing whereby air is brought into the motor housing and drawn around the motor via an impeller into the impeller housing thereby eliminating the need of a separately attached fan to cool the motor or motor bearings. The impeller pulls the air from the motor housing into the impeller housing or blower via an inlet port in the impeller housing and apertures in the back plate of the impeller and out an exhaust port situated in the impeller housing.

  • Publication number: 20020014234
Abstract: A balanced building ventilation system that employs a fireplace as an element of the ventilation system. The fireplace includes a firebox, and an exhaust gas flue is connected to the firebox for exhausting gas from the firebox to the outdoor ambient. A ventilation channel conveys outdoor ambient air into the building interior. A motor-driven draft inducer is connected to the exhaust gas flue for forcing exhaust gas flow out to the outdoor ambient. A motor-driven blower is provided for forcing ventilation airflow through the channel to replace building interior air lost to exhaust gas flow.

  • Patent number: 6145502
Abstract: A novel dual mode of operation gas fireplace of the type having a combustion chamber box and a heat exchanger is provided with a burner in the bottom of the combustion chamber box which creates exhaust gasses to be passed out of the combustion chamber box and into or through the heat exchanger portion of the fireplace mounted on top of or back of the combustion chamber box. The hot exhaust gasses leaving the combustion chamber box may be directed into an exhaust stack or diverted directly into the room to be heated by a blower motor which diverts hot exhaust gas products from the heat exchanger directly into a room area to be heated in a ventless mode of operation. When the blower motor which diverts the exhaust gasses into the room is deactivated, the novel fireplace may be operated in a vented mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 5320086
Abstract: The invention relates to a direct vent gas fireplace adapted for attachment to a concentric flue pipe assembly having an exhaust pipe and fresh air pipe. A top wall, rear wall, bottom wall and side walls define a combustion chamber. A gas burner is disposed in the combustion chamber. A slanted flue attachment wall is attached to and extends between the top wall and rear wall. The slanted flue attachment wall is disposed at obtuse angles relative to the top wall and rear wall. A first pipe member is orthogonally attached to the flue attachment wall and is in fluid communication with the combustion chamber for conveying combustion products from the combustion chamber. A second pipe member having a diameter larger than the first pipe member is disposed concentrically around the first pipe member. The first and second pipe members define an annular space therebetween forming an air intake duct.
