Patent number: 5467697Abstract: A chafing dish assembly which contains a pair of rings that support a pair of heating elements located below a water tray. The water tray is elevated above the heating elements by a frame supported by a pair of pivoting legs. Located within the water tray are a pair of food dishes. The heating elements heat the water within the tray, which heats the food within the dishes. The frame has a bent top edge which provides a ledge for the water tray. The rings are cantilevered from the frame so that the weight of the heating elements deflect the rings away from the water tray. The height of the flame and the weight of the heating elements decrease as the fuel within the elements becomes expended. The reduction in the weight of the heating element induces an upward movement of the rings toward the water tray, wherein the smaller flame is moved into closer proximity with the tray to provide a more uniform heating process of the food.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1994Date of Patent: November 21, 1995Inventor: Hugo Hunziker

Patent number: 5261386Abstract: A portable charbroiler (20) is shown that includes a bottom member (24) and sidewalls (26,26 and 28,28) of thermally insulating ceramic material that form an enclosure. Air inlet slots (30) are located along the bottom edges of the sidewalls, and an outlet port is provided at the upper end of the sidewalls. A grate (52) divides the enclosure into upper and lower chambers (54U and 54L), respectively. Lump carbonaceous fuel (58) is stacked on the grate (52), which stack of fuel is supported at all sides by the enclosure sidewalls (26,26 and 28,28). During combustion, feedback of heat to the fuel from the insulating enclosure bottom member and sidewalls provides for rapid high temperature combustion of the fuel in the 1800.degree. F. to 2200.degree. F. range and substantially smokeless combustion of CO gas and fat vapor. At such high temperatures, a large amount of radiant energy is emitted (FIG. 6 ) for rapid charbroiling of food (38) on grille (36) at the enclosure outlet.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1992Date of Patent: November 16, 1993Assignee: William H. Patent number: 4953533Abstract: A combustible package for purposes of outdoor cooking and barbecuing is disclosed. The combustible package consists of an octagonally-shaped platform, a centrally located chimney, a wall attached along the platform's perimeter, a plurality of legs, and an igniter. The platform has a central aperture which is contiguous with the chimney, a plurality of secondary apertures uniformly located between the central aperture and the platform's perimeter, and a plurality of peripheral apertures. The wall is composed of an inner and outer wall portion which form a peripheral air space around the platform's entire perimeter. The peripheral air space is in communication with the peripheral apertures. When placed below the platform and ignited, the igniter produces hot combustion gases which flow through the central aperture and chimney, the secondary apertures, and the peripheral apertures and air space, thereby uniformly and rapidly heating the charcoal for more uniform burning.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1990Date of Patent: September 4, 1990Inventor: Gary L. Patent number: 4793320Abstract: A fuel combustion apparatus. A base member having side walls which extend generally upwardly therefrom to intersect into a cap member form a container for housing charcoal fuel particles. Charcoal fuel particles are stacked in an overlying relationship within the interior chamber of the container. The interior lining of the chamber is treated with paraffin and a mixture of potassium chlorate. The container is ignited at the base to initiate combustion of the charcoal fuel particles therein. The charcoal fuel particles may also be treated with a flammable petroleum product. Vent holes are placed in the cap member to facilitate air flow within the chamber, and also provided a convenient handle for transport and handling of the apparatus. In an alternative embodiment, the cap member may also be removed to permit access to charcoal particles within the container chamber.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Inventor: Mark C. Patent number: 4782812Abstract: A meat-grilling device consists of an open metal box and a throw-away fuel pack enclosed in a closed box of wire netting for insertion into the metal box, the top of the wire netting serving as grid. The fuel pack comprises three superposed layers: an uppermost layer of charcoal lumps, an intermediate layer of paraffin-soaked wood shavings, and a lowermost layer of igniter material in the form of crossing paper strips covered with a rapid-igniting material. Two long side walls of the metal box are perforated by air openings which, during transport, are covered by four flat legs. The legs are swivelled into vertical position during grilling so as to distance the box bottom from the ground. The fuel is lighted by a match put through an air opening to the igniter material, which ignites the wood shavings over the entire pack area, and which, in turn, lights the charcoal. The wood shavings are consumed rapidly causing the charcoal layer to drop down remote from the grid, preventing scorching of the meat.Type: GrantFiled: May 26, 1987Date of Patent: November 8, 1988Inventor: Dan Kellerman

Patent number: 4503835Abstract: A combustible readily ignitable rectangular container is erected from its originally flat folded state and inserted into a free-standing octagonal vented metal ignition sleeve resting on a grill surface. Crumpled paper is placed within the bottom of the ignition sleeve beneath pivoted vertically swinging grate members thereof and below the bottom of the combustible charcoal container. The quantity of charcoal briquettes is dumped directly from a briquette package into the combustible container to fill the same. The crumpled paper is ignited, which in turn ignites the combustible container and the charcoal briquettes in an efficient manner. After a short interval, a handle member is inserted through apertures of the metal ignition sleeve and the latter is bodily lifted from the grill surface to dump the ignited charcoal briquettes thereon, the vertically swinging grate members swinging downwardly to permit the dumping of the burning briquettes.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1983Date of Patent: March 12, 1985Inventor: Wiley Williams
