Abstract: It is disclosed a process to produce a bio-product starting from a ligno-cellulosic feedstock, comprising a pre-hydrolysis step of the ligno-cellulosic feedstock in one or more pre-hydrolysis vessels to produce a liquid pre-hydrolyzate comprising water and water soluble hemicellulose, followed by a multi-step hydrolysis of the water soluble hemicellulose. The hydrolysis steps are conducted in separated vessel. The liquid pre-hydrolyzate is subjected to a partial hydrolysis step in a first hydrolysis vessel, to produce a first hydrolyzate. A portion of the first hydrolyzate, comprising remnant water soluble hemicellulose, is recirculated in at least one pre-hydrolysis vessel and subjected to a second hydrolysis step. Another portion of the first hydrolyzate comprising monomeric sugars is removed and converted to the bio-product, preferably after a refining hydrolysis step. The process also produces a hemicellulose-depleted feedstock which is preferably treated to produce a cellulosic pulp.

  • Patent number: 10513823
Abstract: Methods and devices are provided for hydrothermal pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass. A mechanically simple and inexpensive vertical steam reactor is fed with biomass feedstock from the top, while pretreated material is removed from the bottom in steady-state by operation of moveable upper and lower restrictor means, which project across the reactor cross section when engaged. The vertical column of biomass is supported by the upper restrictor means. This is periodically withdrawn from the reactor cross section, permitting the column of biomass to fall by force of gravity onto the lower restrictor means. The upper restrictor means is then re-inserted, after which the lower restrictor means is withdrawn permitting a “plug” of pretreated material to be removed by force of gravity.

Abstract: Cellulosic materials are treated with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide in an extruder. Machine configuration and operating parameters are strictly controlled in a manner to enhance the ability of Supercritical CO2 to enter into the cells. This results in a controlled deterioration of the cell walls, increasing the reactivity of cellulose and also enhancing the rate and the extent of cellulose hydrolysis. This precisely controlled combination of pressure, shear & temperature accelerates the penetration of carbon dioxide molecules into the crystalline structures, thus more glucose is produced from cellulosic materials after the cell is destructurized as compared to those without the pretreatment increasing glucose yield by as much as 50%. Concurrent saccharification and fermentation tests also show the increase in the available carbon source from the cellulosic materials for fermentation to produce ethanol.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention overcome the well-known recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass in an economically viable manner. A process and a system are provided for the efficient fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass into cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The cellulose and hemicellulose thus obtained are highly amorphous and can be readily converted into highly concentrated mixtures of five and six carbon sugars using known methods. Typical yields of sugars exceed 100 grams of sugars per liter of sugar solution. Other products, such as alcohols, can easily be prepared according to methods of the invention. The modest process conditions and low solvent/solid ratios of some embodiments of the invention require relatively low capital and processing costs.
