The side hole 20 is installed near the front edge of the guide tube 10. The guide tube 10 advances naturally from the oral cavity, and the front edge of the guide tube 10 reaches the entrance of the esophagus. The view field is obtained by putting the front edge of the bronchofiberscope 200 onto the base 21. The glottis can be found by the view field of the bronchofiberscope 200 while pulling back the guide tube 10 slowly. The path for the bronchofiberscope 200 from the oral cavity to the esophagus can be secured by the guide tube 10 without influence of the obstacles such as a tongue and an epiglottis, and the operatability can be enhanced. Only the guide tube 10 is removed and the bronchofiberscope 200 remains as the guide line for the endotracheal tube insertion.

Abstract: A respiratory access assembly includes a distal plate having a port, which is adapted to be positioned in operable communication with an artificial airway of a patient. The assembly includes a distal plate having a port and a proximal plate which has a first port and a second port. The distal plate is positioned against the proximal plate in a stacked configuration, and each plate is configured to move relative to the other. The assembly has an actuator which is positioned adjacent to at least one plate. The actuator cooperates with both plates to substantially prevent movement of the plates when the port of the distal plate is positioned in an alignment with at least one port of the proximal plate and an object, such as a suction catheter, is positioned through the aligned ports of the plates. The actuator cooperates with at least one plate to permit movement of at least one plate when (a) no object is positioned through aligned ports, and (b) when no ports are aligned.

Abstract: There is provided a tracheal catheter designed so that a suction catheter may be used to suction out any secretions that accumulate in the zone above the balloon. There is further provided a tracheal catheter having a ventilation lumen with a flexible wall to provide a flexible lumen which takes up negligible volume when the catheter is not inserted. The suction catheter may be inserted into the flexible lumen, bending the flexible lumen wall that normally lies substantially flat against the ventilating lumen. As the suction catheter is inserted into the lumen, the lumen opens to accept it. When the catheter is removed, the wall of the flexible lumen moves back into position against the ventilating lumen wall, again taking up negligible volume. There is also provided a method of suctioning the subglottic space of an intubated patient. This involves providing a tube as described above, inserting a catheter into the flexible lumen from the proximal end, and providing suction to the proximal end of the catheter.

Abstract: A respiratory access assembly includes a distal plate having one port and cuff and an axially aligned proximal plate including a first port and first cuff and a second port and second cuff. The distal plate is configured to move relative to the proximal plate. The respiratory access assembly includes an actuator, which has a plurality of predetermined positions. When the actuator is positioned in a movement-enabling position, it permits movement of the plates while simultaneously blocking the first port of the proximal plate. When the actuator is positioned in a first locked (open) position, it locks the plates together and aligns the port of the distal plate with the first port of the proximal plate and un-blocks the first port of the proximal plate so that an object, such as a suction catheter, may be positioned through the aligned ports.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for selective ventilation, comprising an endotracheal tube, an endobronchial tube connected thereto both tubes having a proximal and a distal end, the distal end of the endobronchiol extends beyond the distal end of the endotracheal tube, and means for positioning by feel the distal end of the endobronchial tube in longitudinal and peripheral direction of the trachea. The positioning means can be arranged close to the distal end of the endobronchial tube and can extend so far outside the periphery thereof during use that they come to lie on the carina of the patient. The positioning means can also be asymmetrical relative to the periphery of the endotracheal and/or endobronchial tube and can be adapted for co-action with the trachea wall. The positioning means can comprise a balloon or a resiliently deformable member.

Abstract: An endotracheal tube according to the present invention is used by being installed into a patient so as to use it together with a device having an insertion section which is inserted into the body. A portion overlapping with the device inserted into the patient is formed as a flat shape; and furthermore, an outer face portion formed along a longitudinal direction of a cross-section, of the portion formed in the flat shape contacts the device.

Abstract: A medical device has a cuff adapted to be positioned in the trachea of a subject with a patient tube, and a first tube having a distal end coupled to the cuff and a proximal end communicable with the surroundings. More effective and simpler sample taking and/or dosing of medicament is achieved by a second tube that is coupled with a distal end to the cuff and communicable with the surroundings via a proximal end, together with a pumping device that is connected to the proximal end of the first tube and to the proximal end of the second tube in order to circulate a fluid through the cuff. The cuff has a membrane that is permeable to a specific substance, the membrane being disposed to allow transfer of the specific substance between the interior and the exterior of the cuff.

Abstract: A surface coating for a medical device is provided that may prevent or slow the formation of medical biofilms on the surface of the device. Covalent attachment of certain analogues of N-acyl L-homoserine lactones onto a medical device may provide the advantage of slowing biofilm formation in a manner that is targeted to the surface of the medical device and not the patient. Such a device may allow healthcare providers to prevent bacterial buildups on the surfaces of the device, which may lead to biofilm formation.

Abstract: A method of forming a cannula from a cannula mandrel assembly comprising a pair of mouthpiece/nasal mandrels and a mating facepiece mandrel. The facepiece mandrel has a pair of conical holes, in an intermediate section thereof, for receiving a leading end of one mouthpiece/nasal mandrel. The conical holes allow the facepiece mandrel to slide along the mouthpiece/nasal mandrels until the conical holes abut with respective mating tapering conical sections and prevent further sliding movement along the mouthpiece/nasal mandrels. Following assembly, the assembly is heated, at least one coating of a polymeric material is applied thereto and heat from the assembly at least partially cures the polymeric material on the assembly. Following curing, the facepiece mandrel and formed cannula are slide along the mouthpiece/nasal mandrels until the facepiece mandrel and formed cannula are removed therefrom. Lastly, the facepiece mandrel is removed from the formed cannula.

Abstract: A closed system suction catheter has a catheter enclosed within a flexible envelope secured between a patient end fitting and a machine end fitting. The patient end fitting has a cleaning chamber with a valve at its patient side and is normally closed so that the cleaning chamber is isolated from the patient. The valve has an outer rigid housing enclosing a one-piece elastomeric moulding of tubular shape. The elastomeric moulding has two pads projecting externally through openings in the outer housing. The elastomeric moulding also has a web extending internally across its diameter with a diametrically-extending slit aligned with the pads. A collar mounted on the housing is slidable along the housing to engage the pads so as to apply pressure across the web and open the slit, thereby allowing the catheter to be advanced to the patient.
