Abstract: A female condom has a pouch with an unlubricated surface without spermicides to prevent vaginal infection and a lubricating and retention member is provided having voids therein filled with a lubricant and spermicides to lubricate the interior of the pouch when the sponge member is inserted into the pouch; the retention member includes a tip for piloting the retention member into the interior of the pouch and the retention member further includes a recessed head portion that is compressible to permit insertion of the retention member into the pouch and that is expandable to force the outer surface of the pouch against the surface of the vagina for holding the pouch against withdrawal during coitus; the recess in the head portion is located in axial alignment with an erected penis to accommodate the penis during use.

Abstract: A device for fixing a contraceptive device to the wall of the uterus is disclosed. The fixing device consists of a thread (10) of non-biodegradable material, designed to be attached to the contraceptive device, and a retaining member (11) implantable in the tissue of the uterus; this retaining member (11) consists of a permanent element (12) of non-biodegradable material and a temporary element (13) of biodegradable material which temporarily confers on the retaining member (11) a greater resistance to pulling out than that of the permanent element (12) alone. The device according to the invention is to be used during the period immediately following confinement.

Abstract: A novel intravaginal device usable as a mechanism for introducing medicaments into the vagina of a human female. The device can be used for maintaining in the vagina medicaments and the like that otherwise might leak out and increasing the area of contact between the medicaments and the vaginal mucosa. At the same time it provides a device for the absorption of excess fluids.

Abstract: This invention titled "Permanent Diaphragm" is a method of contraception. It is different from conventional diaphragms in that it is secured by suture to the cervix (mouth of the uterus). It is made of durable material that can be worn indefinitely. It can be inserted and can be removed as an office procedure.

Abstract: Barriers for preventing contraception and disease transmission comprise, in the simplest embodiment, a tubular or cylindrical shield (12, 38) of rubber to isolate the penis from the vagina and an attached flange portion (14) to shield the area surrounding the penis and vagina. The underside of the flange has adhesive (16) around the edge border to retain the flange in place. The device may be used by a female partner and is more effective than a condom since it shields the surrounding area. The device may be formed as part of a panty (30) or man's brief (70) so that the female can control prophylaxis and contraception, or the subordinate male in gay sex can control prophylaxis. The tubular rubber shield is provided in a compacted, folded state (38) with a lubricant (54, 56) and a lubricant-impervious covering (20, 22, 58, 66). When made part of an undergarment, the inner side of the shield is covered with a layer of cotton (62) for comfort.

Abstract: A contraceptive diaphragm has a cup-shaped body molded from a thermoplastic or thermosetting material, and a rim formed with the diaphragm body having a thickness and an inner core structure sufficient to provide a desired bending resilience for use of the diaphragm without any metal spring therein. The thermoplastic or thermosetting material is preferably a silicone rubber. In one embodiment, the rim is molded with a solid inner core structure with a circular cross-section of between 0.060 to 0.375 inch outer diameter. In another embodiment, the rim is formed by an outer layer molded around an inner core in the form of a plastic, injection- or compression-molded ring. The molded plastic ring is preferably made of an acetal plastic material with an outer diameter of between 0.040 to 0.250 inch. The plastic ring may have two or more cutout portions formed spaced apart along its circumference for defining flexing points on the diaphragm rim.

Abstract: An intracervical device for the controlled release of an active agent for the prevention of both specific sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. The device consists of an entirely erodible polymer, or a combination of an erodible polymer with a skeletal polymer capable of maintaining therefor mechanical properties over long duration in the body. The active agents can include one or more than one of a large family of insoluble metal salts which have been shown to affect sperm motility and/or viability and are effacious in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. These agents are slowly released over a defined period of time ranging from one month to up to 18 months in duration due to erosion of the polymer matrix.

Abstract: Contraceptive devices which are effective for extended periods of time are described, in the form of means for releasing an effective amount of a gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone composition and means for releasing an effective amount of an estrogenic hormone over a first period of time, and means for releasing an effective amount of a progestogen for a second period of time, the second period of time being substantially shorter than and running simultaneously with a portion of the first period of time. The gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone composition is selected from gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone, gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone analogues, gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone agonists, gonadotropin hormone releasing hormone antagonists and mixtures thereof. Contraceptive methods employing the devices are also described.

Abstract: A prophylactic device has a first band adapted to be worn around the waist of a human female and a second band connected to the first band and adapted to be worn between the buttocks of a human female such that the anus is covered by the second band. A genitalia shield connects the first band and the second band and covers the perineum of the human female. The genitalia shield portion includes a sheath having an open integral therewith. The sheath is stored in a retracted position in which its length is diminished by a plurality of folded pleats. Placement of a member against the opening of the sheath unfolds the pleats to orient the sheath in an extended position such that the sheath enters the vaginal opening and is oriented within the vagina. Removable tabs attached to the genitalia shield portion and oriented over both sides of the sheath retain lubricant and/or spermicide adjacent to the two sheath sides.

Abstract: Device which is to be placed in the uterus to which certain substances such as metals, metal ions, hormones or therapeutic substances which are to be effective in the uterus for a certain time, can be attached. The device comprises a stem with resilient or flexible arms projecting on either side of the stem near or at one extremity thereof, and the extremity of each of the two arms is bent through an angle greater than 90.degree. so that the extremities point towards the stem. The arms are thus built up of three parts, i.e. a first part and a second part or extension, and a bent piece between them, the three parts of each arm together form an arrow the legs of the arrow being formed by first part and the second part or extension of an arm, the parts being compliantly connected to each other by the bent piece. The direction of the first part near the bent piece points horizontally or upwards.

Abstract: The device includes a continuous flexible pouch which is entirely surrounded by a flange member which acts as a shield to cover the periphery of the vaginal entrance. The pouch, which is preferably in the form of a loose collapsed sheath, is arranged to be introduced into the user's vagina so as to form a liquid barrier between the penis and vagina. Straps and ribbed protrusions are provided for securely maintaining the flange member in its operational position. Preferably, an applicator rod is also provided.

In addition to its fluid absorbing function, absorbent fluid capturing element 40 applies an elastic biasing force to the tubular wall (31) of tubular member (12) for biasing wall (31) against the interior surface of the vaginal cavity, thereby providing a mechanism for retaining tubular member (12) therein. Further, contraceptive system (10) includes a mechanism for inserting tubular member (12) within the vaginal cavity.

Abstract: An X-ray patient restraint comprises brackets which are mounted on the laterally opposite sides of the front of the backboard which also receives the X-ray film, and a restraint strap passes through the brackets to adjustably attach back to itself with Velcro (tm) fasteners. The preferred embodiment is quite wide in order to compress a wide area of the abdominal area of the patient against the backboard for greater print clarity, and two genital shields are alternately and removably attached with Velcro (tm) to cover the gonads or ovaries of the patient.

Abstract: An intra-uterine pessary includes two spreading arms which are in a folded configuration for insertion through the cervical canal and assume an unfolded configuration for retention in the uterine cavity. The two spreading arms form a substantially closed-loop structure in the folded and in the unfolded configuration. The spreading arms are traversed by a third arm which is connected to the spreading arms and to an abutment mounted on the spreading arms. The length of the third arm is changeable. The two spreading arms are made exclusively of a metal wire and are straightened in the folded configuration and have an annular shape and are elastically bent in the unfolded configuration. The length of the third arm can be finely adjustably controlled when the spreading arms ae in the unfolded configuration.

Abstract: A prophylactic device has a planar portion that is configured to cover the perineum of the user to prevent the exchange of bodily fluids between the user and a partner. The planar portion includes a pair of spaced integrally formed, adjustably positionable thigh bands located in spaced parallelism on either side of the planar portion. A leg opening is formed between each of the thigh bands and the planar portion to accommodate the legs of a user. The bands elastically shape to the user to prevent slippage of the planar portion from an overlying conformed relationship with the perineum of a user. The planar portion includes a pouch of generally circular cross-section throughout its length for insertion into a bodily orifice. A method for manufacturing the aforesaid prophylactic device includes the steps of providing a form with a base and a shaft of circular cross-section with its root connected to the base by sloping surfaces.

Abstract: A unitary coital protective garment, comprising a groin covering panel formed of a flexible, resilient, liquid-impenterable material, and a penile sheath integrally formed with the groin covering panel, having a closed distal end, and formed of flexible, resilient, liquid-impenetrable material, integrally leak-tightly joined at its proximal end to the groin covering panel to enable penis insertion into the penile sheath, with the panel being circumferentially continuous around the proximal end of the sheath at its integral junction with the panel. Wrap-around, athletic supporter, apron, and panty-types of construction of the garment may be variously employed. The garment of the invention provides enhanced protection to the wearer and coital partner, and may be advantageous in reducing the risk of transmission of venereal and/or immunosuppressive diseases.

Abstract: A unisex condom to be worn as an underpant type garment with pocket or shaft type depressions or tubular extensions in the lower front and lower rear. During use the tubular extensions can be inserted inside the lower body cavities, vagina and anus or may be reversed or turned inside out for placement as a covering or exterior liner for a penis. This total covering of body parts will more fully protect the user from contacting or spreading disease as the result of sexual activities.

Abstract: Herein presented is an intravaginal device to shield against contact with communicable infections and diseases. The device is an elastic container. The container functions similar to a condom but it can completely cover both the female and and male genitalia. The device can contain lubricant jelly and its exterior is covered with lubricant jelly. The elastic nature of the device allows it to conform to the surface shapes of the vagina and penis as the penis penetrates and enters into the vagina. The device is easy to use and completely disposable.

Abstract: A condom designed for use by females includes an oblong tube formed of a pliant, thin material impervious to spermatozoa and pathogenic organisms, and including a closed distal end. The proximal end is open, and may be provided with a semi-rigid retaining ring secured to the open end to maintain the opening. The proximal portion of the tube is rolled about the retaining ring to reduce the size of the device in a vending package. The invention includes a tampon-like lubricated applicator having a soft, broad tip portion received within the closed distal end, and a tubular handle extending distally therefrom. The applicator is adapted to facilitate vaginal insertion of the condom, with the retaining ring having a sufficient diameter to prevent the proximal end from passing into the vagina.

Abstract: A prophylaxis suitable for women is configured as wearing apparel. The apparel comprises a panty having an upper fabric portion and a lower portion. The lower portion includes a thin flexible liquid impervious membrane which registers with and covers the front and rear crotch area of the wearer. A closed ended tubular extension is formed of one piece with the membrane and is adapted to be inserted into the wearer's vaginal cavity.

Abstract: A contraceptive system (10) is provided for use by both men and women having one piece formation which includes an extended tubular member (12) coupled to a genital shield member (14). Extended tubular member (12) is closed at the distal end (30) and open at the proximal end (32). In the embodiment adapted for use by women, extended tubular member (12) has a non-uniform wall thickness where the bottom wall thickness (36) is greater than the top wall thickness (34). Genital shield (14) includes an absorbent layer (16) adhesively bonded to the surface (15) of shield member (14). Shield member (14) also includes retention straps (18) with clasps (20) for maintaining contraceptive system (10) in position on the body.

Abstract: An electrified vaginal ring comprising an annular ring member fabricated of a medical grade polymer, elastomer, silicone or other comparable plastic material which is compatible with human tissue and fluids and physically proportioned to fit within the vagina of a female human being or other mammal while surrounding the cervix. The annular ring member has at least two physically spaced-apart, electrically conductive surfaces preferably in the form of spaced-apart bands of conductive material extending around either the periphery of the central opening through the annular ring member, or around the outside perimeter of the annular ring member. The electrically conductive surfaces may be comprised of platinum, a platinum alloy, or other comparable electrically conductive material that is electro-deposited, sprayed or otherwise secured to the annular ring member with the conductive material also being compatible with human tissue and fluids.

The coil has at least two layers, of which the first layer is made of an elastic polymer material, serves as a base, and faces directly the rod, while the second layer is made of metal.

Abstract: This invention is in the field of contraception, and relates also to the prevention of the transmission of venereal diseases. The invention relates to a condom adapted to be received by a passive sexual organ prior to intercourse. The condom comprises a thin elastic membrane sheath having a closed end, a supporting ring structure at its open end, and an insertion tube adapted to deliver the condom to a passive sexual organ, such as the vaginal cavity, prior to intercourse and without first affixing the condom to an erect penis.
