Patent number: 9149848Abstract: Sample extraction or trimming from an end strip of an elongated formed metal that is coiled in layers within a tensioned metal coil resting on driven rollers. A cut channel is formed across the material width. In some embodiments the cut channel is formed between the rollers and by cutting at an angle relative to the coil outer surface. Coil weight and/or a coil tensioner mechanism inhibits coil relaxation along the cut channel by maintaining tension on wrapped layers against each other when the coil is unbanded for sample extraction. The coil is rotated so that the cut channel clears the rollers laterally. Material downstream the cut is then separated from the coil. After trimming and/or sample extraction the coil maintains rolled tautness for ease of rebanding.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2011Date of Patent: October 6, 2015Assignee: Primetals Technologies USA LLCInventors: Jennifer Grzyb, Patrick Salpeck, Len Walnoha

Patent number: 5095920Abstract: In a method of adjusting and controlling a cutting device comprising two rollers counter-rotating about parallel axes and provided each with a set of blades where each blade of one roller combines with a blade of the other roller to create a scissor by which discrete pieces are cut from a continuous strip of material, heat is applied to raise the temperature of the cutting device to a selected value higher than the normal operating temperature of the machine; thereafter, having set the blades of each scissor initially by way of a system of adjusters associated with at least one of the two blades, the temperature of the cutting device during operation of the surrounding machine is maintained at a value substantially equal to the selected value by way of monitoring and control media.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1990Date of Patent: March 17, 1992Assignee: G. Patent number: 4364402Abstract: Apparatus for moving the knives relative to their rotary holder in a tobacco cutting machine has a crankshaft which is rotatable and is rotated once during several successive revolutions of the holder. The crankshaft is the input element of a step-down transmission whose output element is a ring gear meshing with pinions for transmission of motion to discrete displacing units, one for each knife. The ring gear is rotated at intervals by a gear which is coaxial with a freewheel. The latter is rocked back and forth by a lever which is pivoted by the crank pin of the crankshaft by way of a rod-like connector. One end portion of the connector is coupled to the lever by an adjusting device which can change the extent of pivotal movement of the lever and hence the extent of rotation of the ring gear whenever the lever is pivoted in one of two directions.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1980Date of Patent: December 21, 1982Assignee: Hauni-Werke Korber & Co.
