  • Patent number: 6491040
Abstract: A holder for compressing a filter of a cigarette includes a cylindrical gripping member having an end provided with a plurality of longitudinal pawls, and a tubular mouthpiece formed with an axial passage having an end open to outside and an axial conical recess having a small end in communication with another end of the axial passage, the axial conical recess being formed with a conical surface, whereby when the gripping member is inserted into the mouthpiece, the longitudinal pawls will be forced to move inwardly to compress the filter of a cigarette to one-fifth of its original volume thereby decreasing the amount of nicotine and tars from passing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 6418937
Abstract: A pipe assembly is provided to accommodate the specific filter preferences of the pipe smoker. The pipe assembly includes a bowl, a stem and a mouthpiece. A cylindrical mounting aperture extends into the end of the stem remote from the bowl, and a connecting passage joins the mounting aperture to the tobacco receiving cavity in the bowl. The mouthpiece has a proximal end with a passage therein and a distal end that can be slidably received in the mounting aperture of the stem. The mouthpiece further includes a filter receptacle that communicates with the passage extending into the proximal end of the mouthpiece. The filter receptacle is dimensioned to accommodate wide prior art filters. The pipe assembly further includes a tubular filter adapter with an outside diameter for slidable engagement in the filter receptacle and an inside diameter dimensioned to receive narrower pipe filters.

  • Patent number: 5301694
Abstract: Fractionated plant extracts, particularly essentially nicotine-free tobacco extracts, useful as tobacco flavorants and methods for preparing and using the same are described herein. These fractionated extracts are stable, non-volatile and relatively odorless under conditions of smoking article or smoking substitute article manufacture and storage, but when thermally provoked, the extracts deliver characteristic flavor to smoking articles or smoking substitute articles. The fractionated plant extracts may be prepared by contacting plant matter with a solvent to produce a crude plant extract; removing the solvent from this plant extract; and isolating a fraction of this extract that when thermally provoked provides the characteristic aroma and flavor of the plant by size exclusion chromatography and monitoring the fraction's integrity by suitable detection means.
