Abstract: The present invention relates to a smoking article comprising two layers of wrapper material, the outer wrapper having an air permeability of at least 200 C.U. and having a greater permeability than the inner wrapper. Encapsulated flavour is held between the inner and outer wrappers. The encapsulation technique is dependent upon the flavour to be encapsulated and the sidestream to mainstream flavour delivery ratio required. Sidestream smoke may be altered without altering the mainstream smoke, thereby altering room odors.

Abstract: A smoking cessation method includes the steps of providing a patient with a tamper-resistant, timed release cigarette dispenser, programming the cigarette dispenser to initially release cigarettes from the dispenser one at a time at a first predetermined interval to regularize the smoking habits of the patient, after an initial period, reprogramming the cigarette dispenser to increase the interval at which cigarettes are dispensed to a second predetermined interval which is longer than the first predetermined interval, and continuing to increase the interval at which cigarettes are dispensed by programming the dispenser, until a critical interval is reached. Once the critical interval is reached, the method preferably includes an abrupt cessation of smoking. The time intervals are set by a person other than the patient, and the dispenser is constructed to prevent the patient from programming the time intervals or from obtaining access to the cigarettes therein except at the expiration of the time intervals.

Abstract: This invention provides novel heterocyclic ester compounds. This invention further provides smoking compositions which contain an invention heterocyclic ester as a flavorant-release additive, as illustrated by the following structure: ##STR1## Under normal cigarette smoking conditions, tetramethylpyrazine and an olefin are released as pyrolysis products, and they enhance the flavor and aroma of the mainstream and sidestream smoke.

Abstract: This invention provides smoking compositions which contain a .beta.-hydroxy-.gamma.-ketoester compound as a flavorant-release additive.In one of its embodiments, this invention provides tobacco compositions which contain a flavorant-release additive such as dodecyl 3-hydroxy-2,2,3-trimethyl-4-oxopentanoate: ##STR1## Under cigarette smoking conditions the above illustrated .beta.-hydroxy-.gamma.-keto ester pyrolyzes into 2,3-butanedione and other products which enhance the flavor of the mainstream smoke and the aroma of sidestream smoke.

Abstract: This invention provides tobacco and non-tobacco smoking compositions which contain a heterocyclic-hydroxy-substituted carboxylate compound as a flavorant additive.In one of its embodiments, this invention provides tobacco compositions which contain a heterocyclic-hydroxy-substituted alkanoate flavorant additive such as ethyl 2-(2-butyl)-3-hydroxy-3-methyl-3-(3-pyridyl)propionate: ##STR1## Under smoking conditions the above illustrated heterocyclic-hydroxy-substituted alkanoate additive and its pyrolysis products flavor the mainstream and sidestream smoke.
