A method of producing a cover layer of natural tobacco leaf for use in manufacturing a cigarillo includes providing a substantially continuous web of a support material having a surface profile, which typically includes surface profile elements such as projections; arranging a plurality of natural tobacco leaves extended flat over the web of support material; and layering the substantially continuous web with the plurality of natural tobacco leaves supported thereon, whereby the surface profile of the web impresses or imprints a pattern into the plurality of natural tobacco leaves.

    Abstract: Wrapper for cigarette manufacture includes transversely extending band regions applied by a printing technique, such as gravure printing. The band regions comprise starch, an anti-wrinkling agent such as 1,2 propylene glycol or glycerin, and optionally calcium carbonate. Any suitable printing technique can be used to apply the aqueous solution to the banded regions. The pattern of banded regions may be bands, stripes, two-dimensional arrays, undulated regions, and the like along and/or around the tobacco rod. The pattern can be applied in one or more layers. The pattern may be configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film-forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate.

    Abstract: A tobacco product is formed by rolling a sheet of material supplied by a roll or rolls (e.g. moistened tobacco leaves) and/or homogenized sheet tobacco about a slit mandrel to form a shaped tube. The shaped tube is then packaged for shipment to an end user or consumer. The shaped tube remains in the rolled, shaped tube form inside the package. After the shaped tube is removed from the package, a consumer can fill the tube with crushed tobacco leaves or other tobacco filler material of a favorite blend, thereby eliminating some steps in the making of a “roll-your-own” tobacco product. A liquid can be added to the sheet or to the finished tube to moisturize same. The liquid can include flavoring. The tubes are unfilled when packaged and sent to a consumer/end user in tube form so that they have a “memory” that helps hold a tubular cigar shape after they are filled with selected tobacco fill material.

    Abstract: A non-smokable tobacco product comprises a rod-shaped element of cigarette tobacco with a filter element at one end and both enclosed by a tubular wrapper. The product is rendered unsmokable by a perforation extending through the wrapper of the tobacco or the filter element so that when air is drawn through the filter substantially all of the air enters through those perforations, there being insufficient air flow through the tip end to propagate normal cigarette combustion of the tobacco at that location or to permit any appreciable amount of smoke reaching the smoker's mouth. The product is rendered smokable by the user covering the perforated region of the wrapper by means of a strip, a sliding band, or a ring which blocks air flow through the perforations and thus converts the product into a self-made cigarette that can be smoked in the manner of a regular cigarette.

    Abstract: Co-extruded smokable material in sheet-like form has a multi-layered structure. The layers are generally parallel to the major surface of the material. The material is provided by subjecting at least two filler materials to high shear agitation and co-extruding the materials while in a semi-soft state. The multi-layered material can be sized by roll treatment in order to provide a sheet-like material having a thickness of less than about 0.008 inch. In particular, the co-extruded multi-layered smokable material is subjected to compressive treatment applied perpendicularly to the major surface of the co-extruded marterial to provide a co-extruded smokable material of reduced thickness. The material so provided can be cut into small sheets (e.g., about 4 inches by 4 inches square) or into strands and employed as cut filler in the manufacture of cigarettes.

    Abstract: The invention is an improved wrapper construction for smoking articles such as cigarettes resulting in a reduced tendency to ignite combustible materials accidentally or carelessly coming into contact with the lit cigarette. The wrapper constructions and smoking articles of the invention have a specially designed structure which causes a cigarette to go out quickly when in contact with a substrate, including many commonly-encountered substrates made of combustible materials. This structure is characterized by a Burn Mode Index ("BMI") as defined for the wrapper of between about 1.5 cm.sup.-1 and 5.0 cm.sup.-1 for a single wrap embodiment. For an alternative double wrapped embodiment, the outer wrap will have a BMI in the range of from about 2.0 cm.sup.-1 to about 40 cm.sup.-1 depending on the BMI of the inner wrap which may vary between about 0.1 cm.sup.-1 to 4.0 cm.sup.-1.

    Abstract: The invention is an improved specially designed wrapper construction for smoking articles producing controlled burn properties of smoking articles such as cigarettes so that the cigarette will self-extinguish after free burning in air for a designed time period. In addition, the wrapper construction results in cigarettes with reduced tendency to ignite combustible substrates, such as upholstered furniture, when in contact with them. Therefore, smoking articles with this wrapper construction reduce the likelihood of accidental fires, yet they free-burn rapidly for a designed period of time without puffing. However, during a normal puffing sequence the behavior of cigarettes with these wrappers is indistinguishable from commercial cigarettes. On the other hand, other self-extinguishing cigarettes go out without puffing and therefore have to be relighted frequently.

    Abstract: A smokable, coherent sheet of disintegrated vegetable materials and/or tobacco waste, said sheet being provided with a water-insoluble film on one surface and being obtained in that the vegetable materials and/or tobacco waste are pressure-formed with binding agents and water, the share of which is lower than that of the dry substance employed, between forming elements, the formed, coherent and still moist sheet is coated at a moisture content of 30 to 50% with a solution or suspension having at least one water-soluble, modified pectin from the group of low-esterified pectin with an esterification degree of below 40% and/or amidified, low-esterified pectin with an amidation degree of over 15%, the modified pectin is contacted with bivalent and/or trivalent metal ions and the coated sheet is dried, with the concentration of the modified pectin on the sheet surface being at least 0.5 percent by weight, as referred to the dry weight of the finished product.

    Abstract: Sheet material especially useful in forming wrappers for smokable articles such as cigarettes that results in reduced sidestream smoke. The sheet is formed by applying to a cellulosic web an amount of an alkali metal salt greatly in excess of the amounts of such materials previously used as burn enhancers. The cellulosic material may be flax fiber or other natural cellulosic fibers conventionally used for such wrappers. Examples of salts include the sodium or potassium salts of acids such as carbonic, formic, acetic, propionic, malic, lactic, glycolic, citric, tartaric, fumaric, oxalic, malonic, succinic, nitric, and phosphoric. The composition can be applied by any conventional method such as coating, dipping, impregnating, printing, and the like. For example, at least about 6% by weight of potassium citrate is needed to obtain the benefits of the invention, and preferably an amount in the range of from about 12% to about 16% by weight.
