    Abstract: A cigarette includes a charge or roll of smokable material (e.g., tobacco cut filler) circumscribed by two layers of paper wrapping materials. The first or inner wrapping material includes an inorganic filler material and tobacco material within the web. The inner wrapping material also can include a water soluble salt burn chemical and a carbonaceous material within the web. The second or outer wrapping material circumscribes and overwraps the first wrapping material, has a cellulosic base web and inorganic filler material, and exhibits a low inherent air permeability. The outer wrapping material can include a magnesium hydroxide filler, and exhibits an inherent air permeability of below about 15 CORESTA units and a net air permeability above about 40 CORESTA units. The cigarette is capable of sustaining smolder under FTC smoking conditions while yielding very low levels of visible sidestream smoke.

    Abstract: Tobacco product, consisting of a pre-portioned tobacco supply (15) surrounded by cigarette paper (11; 17) of tubular shape. The tobacco supply is configured as a dimensionally stable tobacco charge of the finished cigarette and is unsmokable by itself but consists completely of smokable material, and it is provided for the self-making of either filterless or filter-tipped cigarettes. Preferably, the tobacco supply (15) comprises an air permeable strand wrapper (13) of smokable material, e.g. of tobacco sheet material. To facilitate insertion of the preformed dimensionally stable tobacco strand (10) into a prefabricated tubular cigarette paper wrapper (11), a funnel-like sleeve (18) is provided whose smaller-diameter end (20) is adapted to be joined to the open end of the tubular cigarette paper wrapper (11). Through this inserting funnel(18) the tobacco strand (10) may be passed without difficulty into the tubular cigarette paper wrapper (11).

    Abstract: A tobacco product consists of a preportioned tobacco strand (10) surrounded by a preformed tubular cigarette paper wrapper (11; 17). The tobacco strand is formed of individual tobacco fibers which are interconnected to each other by a binding agent to form a dimensionally stable tobacco strand. The binding agent and the fibers are each smokable but the outer surface of the tubular dimensionally stable tobacco strand is air pervious so that the strand as such is not directly smokable. The dimensionally stable strand (10) is inserted into the preformed tubular cigarette paper wrapper (11) to form a smokable cigarette. The one end of the strand is tapered for easier insertion of the strand into the preformed cigarette paper wrapper.

The jacket is surrounded at a distance by a concentric sleeve of a gas-impermeable material so that between the jacket and the sleeve at least one flow space results; the sucked-in air flows through the flow passages in the combustion element, then back through the flow space between the jacket and the sleeve and finally through the carrier for the aerosol precursor to the mouthpiece. The carrier includes a precursor, and the combustion element has a plurality of axial passages.

Smoking articles in accordance with the disclosure exhibit acceptable mainstream smoke over the whole of the smoking process, i.e., there is less perception of an increase in mainstream smoke temperature.

The inside wall holds a plurality of elongated segments of tobacco aligned end to end. Different tobaccos may be utilized in each segment. The upstream, axial end of each segment is sealed by paper. The inside wall includes a plurality of gas passages therethrough near the axial end seal such that gas from the burning end of the cigarette passes through those passages into the interspace between the outside and inside walls, expands and cools. This cooling and expansion reduces the accumulation of noxious substances in the segments of tobacco downstream.

    Abstract: Co-extruded smokable material in sheet-like form has a multi-layered structure. The layers are generally parallel to the major surface of the material. The material is provided by subjecting at least two filler materials to high shear agitation and co-extruding the materials while in a semi-soft state. The multi-layered material can be sized by roll treatment in order to provide a sheet-like material having a thickness of less than about 0.008 inch. In particular, the co-extruded multi-layered smokable material is subjected to compressive treatment applied perpendicularly to the major surface of the co-extruded marterial to provide a co-extruded smokable material of reduced thickness. The material so provided can be cut into small sheets (e.g., about 4 inches by 4 inches square) or into strands and employed as cut filler in the manufacture of cigarettes.

    Abstract: Filter cigarettes can be manufactured in a highly cost effective manner. Filter cigarettes include a tobacco rod having two segments of smokable material. The first segment is positioned at the lighting end of the cigarette and includes expensive, normally high quality tobaccos. The second segment is positioned at the filter end of the rod and includes cost effective smokable materials. A cellulose acetate filter element is axially aligned with the rod and is positioned adjacent to the second segment. Tipping material attaches the filter element to the tobacco rod. The second segment extends along the rod up to about 20 mm past the foremost point which the tipping material extends. The combined longitudinal length of the filter element and the second segment extends up to about 60 percent of the total length of the smoking article.

    Abstract: A rod-like filler for the making of a cigarette rod is obtained by showering particles of tobacco onto a foraminous belt conveyor which is located in front of a suction chamber and is flanked by two additional foraminous belt conveyors or by two stationary sidewalls so that the particles form a thin layer having a substantially U-shaped cross-sectional outline with a centrally located web and two legs. The legs are thereupon moved toward each other to convert the layer into a tube having a relatively soft core or a centrally located channel which is devoid of tobacco, and the filler is then draped into a web of cigarette paper and simultaneously densified to reduce its cross section to that of a cigarette before the resulting cigarette rod is subdivided into discrete cigarettes of desired length. The thickness of the layer is a fraction of its width.
