  • Patent number: 8479751
Abstract: A dental plier-type tool is provided for removing debris that is trapped or lodged between teeth without applying pressure to the adjacent teeth or crown itself and thus avoiding loosening the teeth (or crown). The current method for removing debris that is lodged between the teeth is usually accomplished by either of the following methods . . . manual flossing, a flossing type tool, a dental scaler, or a dental explorer. The problem with the current methods is that they all transfer unnecessary up and down, side to side pressure to the adjacent teeth or crown as pressure is being applied to the debris being dislodged, thus risking the chance of loosening the teeth (or crown). The uniqueness and advantage of the present invention is that, when used in conjunction with floss that has been properly mounted on the tool and under the debris, it transfers all it's “plier-type” power only to the debris being removed while holding the adjacent teeth or crown firmly in place.

  • Publication number: 20130160790
Abstract: The stem extended from the handle has a slot in the center dividing it into two halves. The ends of two halves branch out to form a ‘Y’ structure and then each extended forwards to form two prongs. Each prong is bent downwards 90 degrees at two thirds of its length with a ‘T’ shaped slit in the tip. The ends of the arms of the ‘Y’ structure are connected by a link. A sliding button holds the new floss and the return floss. With the button in the slot and the floss routed through the guiding rings in the arms of the ‘Y’ structure, under the link, up and over the prongs and through the ‘T’ slits, pulling the button towards the handle creates the tension in the floss, rotating the button feeds new floss across the tips and rewinds the used floss onto the button.

The locking member locks the jaws tightly such that there is substantially no gap or space between the mating surfaces so that the mating surfaces abut against each other closely to fasten the dental floss. The locking member and the jaws also comprise mating surfaces to be able to securely fasten the dental floss when the locking member locks both jaws.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for positioning and moving a flexible element in space. The element is formed into a loop mounted on a pair of positioning handles. The loop, which may be a real or a virtual loop, is mounted on the two handles so as to be movable relative to the handles and to form a working segment of the element between corresponding one free end of the handles, each by one hand or both by the fingers (and thumb) of one hand, positions the working segment in space and manipulation of the loop moves the working segment relative to the handles. The apparatus and method find advantageous application in dental flossing devices, a laparoscopic surgical device or cutting or abrading devices, for example.

Abstract: A power-driven dental flossing device has an elongate housing of three casings with an extending housing arm forked at its front, which contains dental floss reels, a dividing gear system, dental floss operating and winding switches, and a powered motor with batteries and/or a transformer. Dental floss across two tines of the forked arm is wound on the two reels, one of which supplies fresh dental floss, the other takes up used floss. The dental floss can be automatically reciprocated between the tines and teeth by pulling an operating switch backward, and also can be manipulated manually by pushing the same operating switch forward. The floss can also be automatically wound in one direction at time to provide a fresh length of the floss, or to rewind it back at any time.

  • Patent number: 5560378
Abstract: A self-dispensing dental floss applicator has a U-shaped elongated housing (1) with two hollow prongs (4a, 4b) at one end and a larger opposite end to contain the locking mechanism and the spool (3) of fresh floss. The locking mechanism composed of a casing (5), two grip pads (7), a spring 8 and a lever (6) with two eccentric friction parts is used to hold the floss in position thus creating the right tension on the floss. After rotating the lever (6) up, a length of floss from the spool (3) is initially pulled through one side of the locking mechanism, spanned through the two prongs (4a, 4b) and then pulled through the other side of the locking mechanism. The used end (16b) of the floss passes through an aperture in the cover (2) and a surplus length thereof is cut off by a cutter. By pulling the floss by hand at the bottom part of the instrument, fresh floss (16A) is spanned between the prongs for use.

  • Patent number: 5423338
Abstract: This invention is substantially a device for properly orienting and securing dental floss for the purpose of cleaning the regions between the teeth in a convenient manner. Floss resides in a storage cavity such as can be located in the handle of the device. The floss is routed from the cavity through a system of grooves to a U-shaped member which places the floss between the teeth. A locking mechanism removes slack from the floss and engages a taunt grip on the floss. The aforementioned locking mechanism is readily disengaged to allow advancement to a new section of floss. A compliant sealing member is attached to the locking mechanism to prevent fluids from entering the floss chamber.

  • Patent number: 5188133
Abstract: The dental flossing device comprises an elongated cylinder, at least a portion of which is hollow, with an extension having a forked end with curved prongs. A commercially-available spool of floss is located on a spindle in the hollow portion of the cylinder. A first locking mechanism holds the floss in a small space between two surfaces with sufficient friction to firmly retain the floss. When relaxed, the floss can be readily pulled through the first locking mechanism. The floss is fed to the exterior where it is stretched across fork prongs. The floss is threaded through a second locking mechanism similar to the first. The two locking mechanisms are controlled by a single external control and, thus, are both activated or deactivated at the same time. They oppose each other, pulling different points on the floss to create and maintain a strong tension in the floss where it spans the fork, thus facilitating flossing.

  • Patent number: 5167753
Abstract: A filament of thermoplastic material is formed into a continuous strand of connected beads having a longitudinal slit that penetrates about half way into each bead. This is done by passing the filament between a pair of rotating mold wheels having matching, hemispherical cavities in their outer edges with a central, circumferential flange in the edge of one wheel-the flange forming the slit. An end bead of the filament is loaded into a first clamp that feeds it to second clamp that grasps the bead while a knife severs it from the strand. The second clamp is then moved to force its held bead onto a short span of floss being held by a third clamp, so that the floss is press-fitted into the slit in the bead. The bead and floss are then released by their respective clamps, and a fourth clamp grasps the floss and moves it forward for the required distance between beads so that the next bead can be pressed thereon.
