  • Patent number: 7509975
Abstract: Fluid sensing shut-off devices with timer and methods of operation to shut off fluid flow if a primary shutoff valve sticks in the on condition. An embodiment is disclosed using a microphone to sense fluid flow, with a microprocessor periodically awakening from a sleep mode to power the sensor and determine if there is flow. If there is flow, the microprocessor times flow, and if flow is not shut off within a predetermined length of time, the microprocessor shuts off the valve. The valve itself normally held in a magnetically latched, valve open state, but may be unlatched by a current pulse to close the valve. Various embodiments and applications are disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20080087330
Abstract: The present invention is a water conservation safety shut-off valve assembly for use on locations which normally have intermittent water usage but need to indicate when there is constant water usage, such as a leak. The valve assembly has a valve body with a fluid pathway and a valve plug held in an open position allowing water to flow through the pathway. As water flows through the pathway, a flow detection switch monitors water flowing through the pathway and begins timing duration of water flowing through the pathway. If the water flow through the pathway stops, the timer value is reset to zero. If the water flows through the pathway, and the timer circuit reaches a predetermined value, the valve closes the pathway, stopping the flow of water through the valve assembly.

  • Patent number: 6467694
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a thin film of water to a solar energy impacted surface, especially a building, while frequently testing itself for leaks or breaks in the piping system, testing for failure of one or more valves, or malfunction of the control system. By measuring the rate of evaporation, and the level of absorption of fluid by the surface, the apparatus applies fluid at appropriate times to achieve nearly 100% evaporation, thereby maximizing its cooling effects. While maintaining a narrow temperature excursion from one water cycle to the next, the system provides alternating wet and dry conditions on the roof, discouraging biological growth. The apparatus includes a master control valve capable of preventing all water sources from providing water in the event of any component or system failure. By so doing, any failure is “fail-safe”, rather than “fail-catastrophic.
