  • Patent number: 8668183
Abstract: A magnetic safety valve for installation through a tank wall incorporates a piston movable within a valve body. The valve is held normally-closed by two opposite-pole magnets, one in the inner end of the piston, and one in the valve body. A vacuum produced by a pump connected to the valve will act upon the outer end of the piston, producing a force tending to move the piston outward. When the vacuum-induced outward force on the piston exceeds the attractive force between the two magnets, it pulls the piston outward and away from the valve body magnet, unseating the inner end of the piston from the valve body, and allowing outward fluid flow through the valve. A second valve seat may be provided for engagement with an outer portion of the piston to prevent uncontrolled fluid flow out of the tank in the event of valve damage.

Abstract: A vacuum-actuated shear valve coupled between piping from a storage tank and piping internal to a fuel dispenser that automatically opens and closes in response to a vacuum level. A vacuum actuator is provided to control a fuel flow valve inside the shear valve. When a sufficient vacuum level is generated to the vacuum actuator, the actuator keeps the flow path valve inside the shear valve open. When the vacuum is lost, the vacuum actuator releases the flow path valve inside the shear valve, which closes it. The vacuum actuator is coupled to a secondary containment space of a fuel-handling component that is drawn under a vacuum level by a vacuum-generating source to monitor for leaks. Abstract: A vacuum relief assembly for a containment vessel. The vacuum relief assembly includes a normally closed vacuum activated valve that selectively permits flow into the containment vessel from the atmosphere through an interior passage. The valve body includes an inlet opening into the interior passage and an outlet opening normally closed by the valve. A screen member is disposed upstream of the inlet opening. The screen is cylindrical and is supported between a shoulder on the valve body and a cap secured to the valve body.

Abstract: A metallic air admittance valve has a tubular body with a valve chamber integral to one end of the tubular body. The valve chamber has a valve and an air inlet configured to permit the flow of air when the pressure within the valve is less than the pressure outside of the valve, but to prevent the flow of air when the pressure within the valve equals or exceeds the pressure outside of the valve. The tubular body and valve chamber are fabricated from metal and, therefore, do not emit noxious or toxic fumes when subjected to fire. Plumbing systems in commercial buildings may have metallic air admittance valves located within the plenum area of the building without presenting the risk of the distribution of toxic fumes throughout the building when the air admittance valve is subjected to fire.

Abstract: An air admittance valve configured when subjected to a negative pressure condition to vent a pipe system to an ambient environment. In general, the air admittance valve includes a main body, inner and outer valve seats, a flexible sealing element, and a lid. The inner and outer valve seats define at least one vent opening between valve seats that is configured, when open, to communicate with the ambient environment. The flexible sealing element is devoid of a rigidifying structure, is configured to move to and from a closed position and an open position, and defines an outer perimeter surface, an inner perimeter surface, and opposite top and bottom surfaces extending between the outer and inner perimeter surfaces. At least one of the lid or the main body further comprises one or more guiding elements that define one or more guiding surfaces configured to guide the sealing element to and from the closed position and the open position.

Abstract: An application for a living-hinge air vent valve connectable to a sewer conduit includes a base and a cover sealed to the base forming a cavity between the cover and the base. A fluid inlet shaft depends from a roof of the base and is connected to external air passages passing through a side of the base and through vents in a side of the cover. A living-hinge flapper is situated above the fluid inlet shaft and within the cavity. The living-hinge flapper allows air to flow from the fluid inlet shaft into the cavity and prevents sewerage gasses from flowing from the cavity out through the fluid inlet shaft. One or more connecting shafts in the base fluidly connect the cavity with a sewer system.

An air inlet aperture is formed in the housing so as to be open to ambient air. A sealing element is disposed within the housing and biased against the air inlet aperture by a spring so as to effectively seal the inner chamber of the housing from ambient air. When a maximum allowed vacuum level within the pump is exceeded, such as when a swimming pool drain is obstructed, the sealing element moves into the inner chamber and opens the air inlet aperture causing the pump to rapidly lose its prime and enabling removal of the entrapment.
