  • Patent number: 6401758
Abstract: An apparatus for providing a variable pitch thread includes a hollow cylindrical element configured to provide a plurality of parallel, radially projecting ridges extending circumferentially around the cylindrical element and spaced apart with a given step as measured parallel to a central axis of the cylindrical element. The cylindrical element also featuring a slit extending substantially parallel to the central axis along the length of the cylinder. An actuation mechanism is configured to selectively generate controlled relative displacement between the opposing edges on opposing sides of the slit so as to vary a helical angle of the projecting ridges relative to the central axis. The actuation mechanism is preferably configured to relatively displace the opposing edges such that the plurality of projecting ridges together form alternatively a helical pattern and a pattern of substantially closed rings.

This allows the material of the strip to differ in its properties from the material of the sheet, so that the nature of welded closure can be tailored to particular applications. It also allows manufacture of sleeves having hold-down adhesives applied on them to be conducted with greater ease and economy. The sleeve can be manufactured using continuous welding, for example by heated wedge welding.

  • Patent number: 5339867
Abstract: A composite small-diameter tubing resistant to interaction with materials conveyed therethrough such as liquids containing alcohols or corrosive agents which includes a cylindrical outer metal conduit having a hollow central shaft extending longitudinally therethrough defined by an interior wall; and a continuous non-reactive interior tube surrounded by and positioned within the cylindrical metal conduit. The tubing can be manufactured by a process which includes the steps of a) positioning a length of non-reactive tubing having a predetermined outer diameter within an inner diameter of metal tubing of essentially corresponding length, the metal tube having an unsealed side seam, wherein the inner diameter is greater than the outer diameter of the non-reactive tubing; and b) sealing and reducing the metal tubing to an outer diameter essentially equal to the predetermined outer diameter of the interior tubing. The non-reactive interior tube may be made of a suitable polymeric material.

  • Patent number: 5285818
Abstract: A flexible duct adapted to be suspended from a support and method of making same. The duct comprises a conduit of heat-sealable plastic film having a longitudinally extending fin on the conduit for suspending the conduit. The fin comprises first and second face-to-face layers of heat sealable film. The fin includes spaced apart reinforced regions which are adapted for engagement with fasteners for suspending the conduit. The reinforced regions comprise portions of the first and second layers which are heat-sealed together. According to the method, a duct is made from an elongate tube of flexible heat sealable material. The sidewall of the tube is joined to itself along a longitudinal line to define a first relatively larger tube forming a longitudinally extending conduit, and a second relatively smaller tube forming a longitudinally extending double-walled fin for suspending the duct.

  • Patent number: 5236765
Abstract: The invention relates to heat-recoverable covers which comprise embedded electrical resistance heaters, and to methods of covering an elongate object using such covers. In a preferred embodiment (FIG. 5), the cover comprises a heat-recoverable polymeric sheet (22) or fabric, provided with upstanding rails (24,25) as a first closure means. A heating element (36) is embedded in the sheet and arranged to follow a serpentine path such that each return loop portion 38 projects beyond the edges of the cover. The sheet is coated on its inner surface with a layer of adhesive and/or sealant (28,30). In use, the cover is wrapped around a substrate (32) at least once, and first and second closure means (24,25and 26,27) are engaged to hold the cover in the wrapped configuration. The cover is then heated to cause the cover to recover, and the adhesive and/or sealant to form a seal.

The boot 20 has a slit 30 and an associated resealing arrangement 39 which allows the slit 30 to be resealably closed. The resealing arrangement 39 thus enables the protected mechanism or bearing 18 to be inspected without removal of, or damage to, the boot 20 while still allowing the boot to retain its ability to protect the bearing 18 from foreign object damage. The preferred resealing arrangement 39 is of the hook and loop type which is sold under the registered trademark Velcro.RTM..

Abstract: A longitudinal raceway is provided for housing electrical components such as in a space-dividing wall structure or the like. The raceway includes a pair of elongated raceway sections which, when in longitudinal juxtaposition, define a generally closed hollow structure for concealing and protecting the electrical components. A hinge is connected between adjacent longitudinal sides of the raceway sections whereby the sections are movable about the hinge between open and closed positions. Complementary interengaging latches are provided on the opposite longitudinal sides of the raceway sections to hold the sections in the closed position.

Abstract: A universal flexible transition connector for connecting the ends of spaced apart wiring ducts is described. The connectors are flexible along six axes of change to provide a single fitting capable of making any number of gradually curved interconnections between ducts required for use in fiber optics installations. The connectors include a duct transition converter having a cuff formation in one end for gripping attachment to the multi-sided end of a first wiring duct. The opposite end of the converter includes a resilient sleeve portion for cooperatively engaging the end of a flexible tubing member. A similar converter provided on the opposite end of the flexible tubing may be connected to the second duct end to form a smooth transition connection between duct system elements of a premises wiring system.
