  • Patent number: 4319610
Abstract: A process for the coating of metal tubes by the application of polyethylene to the preheated tubes, a polyethylene with a melt index of over 1 g/10 minutes being applied first to the pre-heated metal tube and a polyethylene with a low melt index being applied thereupon, the process comprising a first step of applying a polyethylene with a melt index of 1.2 to 70 g/10 minutes (190.degree. C./2.16 kg) to the metal tube which has been pre-heated to a temperature of at least 200.degree. C., a second step in which the coating is cooled to a temperature of about 110.degree. to 170.degree. C. and a third step of applying a self-supporting film of polyethylene with a melt index of 0.1 to 7 g/10 minutes at this temperature so that the total coating has a minimum layer thickness of 1.5 to 4 mm and a coated article coated according to said process.

  • Patent number: 4306591
Abstract: A hose resistant to deformation is described which includes the usual polymeric tube and outer cover, and at least one annular reinforcement layer of fiber bundles sandwiched between the tube and cover. A polymeric aqueous-insoluble continuous film impregnates the fiber bundles and binds the reinforcement to at least one of the cover and tube, the continuous polymeric film serving to unexpectedly stiffen the hose appreciably. A method for producing the hose is described wherein the adhesive film is formed by applying a latex dispersion to the hose tube and/or reinforcement.

  • Patent number: 4287034
Abstract: A protective coating adhered to the surface of a metal substrate such as a pipe using an adhesive composition containing an adhesive component and a polyhydroxy compound protects the substrate from corrosion. The adhesive has improved resistance to cathodic disbonding which generally weakens the adhesive bond between the protective coating and the substrate when a current is impressed through the substrate causing it to function as a cathode. The electric current inhibits loss of metal ions from the substrate to the environment thus reducing corrosion of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 4268334
Abstract: In a pipe coating made by wrapping the pipe with polyolefin tape and a butyl rubber based adhesive, the strength of the bond to the pipe at elevated temperature is improved by incorporating in the adhesive a cross-linking agent which is either 0.15-1% by weight of p-dinitrosobenzene or 1.0 to 2.5% of p-quinonedioxime, or both together with an activator.

  • Patent number: 4243453
Abstract: A composite pressure sensitive adhesive construction contains a central release liner, a layer of an adhesive on each side thereof, and an exterior release liner on at least one of the adhesive layers. The central release liner and the exterior release liner contain release coatings on surfaces thereof which contact the adhesive layer. The composite construction may be made up in the form of a roll for easy dispensing or in the form of a precut tape. The pressure sensitive adhesive construction is generally useful for making any type of sealing connection wherein an initial releasable connection is desired. For example, the pressure sensitive adhesive construction may be utilized in sealing pipe insulating jackets wherein the exterior release liners are removed and the adhesive construction is applied to the opposite longitudinal ends or sides of the insulating jacket cover.

  • Patent number: 4235652
Abstract: A low profile heat sealing iron for use in applying heat activatable tape in areas of very limited access, such as the sealing of periodic joints in air duct is disclosed. The low profile sealing iron requires only a few inches or less of clearance and has a tape guiding means that feeds the tape to the proper location for heat sealing as the iron is slid along the surface of the member on which the tape is being applied. Preferably, the iron has a handle of adjustable length which permits the sealing iron to be used on ducts measuring six to eight feet or more when the handle is extended, but having a handle only about three feet long or less for easy carrying and handling at other times. A method of using the low profile sealing iron to seal joints in air ducts is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4216802
Abstract: An improved elongate deformable tube for use in the conveyance of fluids and/or fluid transmission signals under pressure having a bore therethrough enclosed by a composite annular wall comprising a seamless, as welded, or welded and drawn inner tubular shaped layer made from a metallic material and an outer tubular shaped layer made from a polymeric material. The walls of both the inner and outer layers are substantially uniform in radial thickness around their circumferences with the radial wall thickness of the outer polymeric layer being 50% or more than the total radial thickness of the composite wall of the tube. The outer layer is preferably formed about the inner layer by means of an extrusion process.

  • Patent number: 4213487
Abstract: A process for producing a laminate comprising a metal sheet having thermoplastic material on both sides thereof is described. The thermoplastic material is calendered to produce an upper thermoplastic sheet and a lower thermoplastic sheet. A metal sheet is fed into the nip between the calender rolls in order to contact the metal sheet simultaneously with the upper and lower thermoplastic sheets, thus producing a laminate. Processes for producing a pipe-wrapping material, a roofing structure and a solvent-welded joint are also provided.
