Patent number: 5950692Abstract: In an arrangement for limiting the fill level in a fuel tank having a filler neck with a tank inlet end, a valve flap is pivotally supported in the inlet end such that, in an open position, the valve flap is pivoted toward the fuel flow entering the tank during refueling and is connected, by way of a crank arm and a coupling rod to a float which is disposed in an essentially vertical guide tube. The coupling rod extends through the float and has spaced top and bottom stops providing for lost motion coupling between the float and the coupling rod whose weight is sufficient to keep the valve flap in an open position. When the fuel in the tank lifts the float and, after the float engages the top stop, lifts the coupling rod, closing movement of the valve flap is initiated which is then fully closed by the inflowing fuel utilizing the lost motion distance between the float and the bottom stop of the coupling rod.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1997Date of Patent: September 14, 1999Assignee: DaimlerChrysler AGInventors: Georg Georgs, Dieter Scheurenbrand, Roland Schirmer, Thorsten Stahl, Manfred Stotz

Patent number: 5787942Abstract: A snap-action flow interrupt device for terminating flow into a cryogenic storage container utilizes the momentum of the incoming liquid spray as a means of maintaining a float in a submerged position until the proper liquid level is attained. The incoming spray of liquid exerts a downward impact force on a surface of the float. The rising liquid level exerts an upward and increasing buoyant force on the float. When the rising liquid in the tank disrupts the spray, the buoyant force snaps the float upwards to interrupt the flow of liquid. The abrupt motion of the float generates a pressure spike and flow reduction, either of which may be easily detected by automatic fill termination devices or by a human operator.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1996Date of Patent: August 4, 1998Assignee: MVE, Inc.Inventors: Duane Preston, Paul Drube, Thomas Drube

Patent number: 5388622Abstract: A two-stage float actuated shut-off valve for use in underground fuel storage tanks utilizes a drop tube coaxially mounted within the storage tank fill pipe. Fuel flowing into the tank is passed through the drop tube which projects downwardly into the interior of the tank to a valve housing located at the lower end of the drop tube. Floats slidably mounted in a recessed area in the housing outside of the drop tube within the tank independently operate pivoted valve doors to a closed position within the valve housing, a lower float closing one valve door to block a major portion of incoming fuel flow passage when the level of fuel in the storage tank reaches a predetermined first level and a second upper float causing the secondary valve door to overlap an aperture in the main valve door to almost completely close the flow of fuel to the tank.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 1993Date of Patent: February 14, 1995Assignee: EBW, Inc.Inventor: Paul E. Patent number: 5381838Abstract: In a fuel inlet device for a fuel tank, a flap valve is provided at an end of a fuel filler tube opening into the fuel tank, and a float which rises with a rise in a surface level of the fuel in the tank closes this flap valve when the fuel surface level has reached a prescribed level. Thus, when the surface level of the fuel in the fuel tank has reached a prescribed level, the flap valve linked with the float is closed, and prevents any more fuel from being filled into the fuel tank because the filling nozzle detects this rise in the surface level of the fuel in the filler tube, and stops filling any more fuel into the tank. Therefore, it is possible to connect the breather tube in the fuel tank directly with a canister device without the intervention of a relief valve, and the internal pressure of the fuel tank can be maintained substantially no higher than the atmospheric pressure. Thus, the release of fuel vapor from the filler cap can be avoided.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1994Date of Patent: January 17, 1995Assignees: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, Nifco, Inc.Inventors: Hideo Watanabe, Shoji Takahashi, Takeshi Suzuki, Masatoshi Oikawa

Patent number: 4276916Abstract: An automatic shut-off nozzle has liquid flow through its vapor return means stopped in response to movement of an actuator by a flexible diaphragm when liquid has filled the vapor line sufficiently to move a float into engagement with the diaphragm. The actuator produces a signal to cause stopping of liquid flow through the nozzle. In another embodiment, a flexible diaphragm is positioned to block vapor flow through the vapor return means when a predetermined quantity of liquid is collected by the diaphragm. The blocking of the vapor return means creates an increased pressure, which can be sensed by a pressure transducer, for example, with the pressure transducer producing a signal to stop liquid flow through the nozzle. The automatic shut-off nozzle also stops flow in response to the tank being filled to a predetermined level with liquid or to the pressure in the tank exceeding a predetermined pressure.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1979Date of Patent: July 7, 1981Assignee: Dover CorporationInventor: Paul R.
