Patent number: 5217052Abstract: An assembly intended for use on underground storage tanks provides ready access to a fill pipe from ground level. At the same time the assembly serves as a spill containment means for accidental spillage and a secondary containment means for the fill pipe. The assembly of the invention comprises a secondary containment chamber having a sidewall with means for attaching to the storage tank. An anchor ring which is attached to an upper open end of the containment chamber acts as a permanent ground base for the assembly. A bridging surface cover within the anchor ring has a removable lid positioned in its interior portion to gain access to the chamber's interior for a filling operation. The assembly also comprises a fill pipe for delivering liquid to the storage tank. The fill pipe is positioned within the secondary containment chamber with a discharging end extending through the chamber's bottom and a receiving end terminating within the chamber but near the bridging surface cover.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1991Date of Patent: June 8, 1993Inventor: Bruce R. Patent number: 5095956Abstract: A fuel spillage control apparatus contains fuel from overfilling of a fuel tank and allows venting of volatile vapors. A fuel spill transfer pipe allows passage of fuel overflow into the fuel holding chamber. A fuel drain pipe communicates with the fuel spill transfer pipe in the fuel holding chamber and drains fluid of a predetermined level or greater out of the fuel holding chamber through the fuel spill transfer pipe. A fuel-buoyant drain pipe sealing means closes the fuel drain pipe when the fuel level in the fuel drain pipe reaches the fuel drain pipe inlet. An orifice in the bottom of the fuel holding chamber allows draining of liquids and solids heavier than fuel from the fuel holding chamber.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1991Date of Patent: March 17, 1992Inventor: Randolf W. Patent number: 4793387Abstract: An overfill and spillage protection device for capturing fuel spilled from a tank touch supply hose or the fill pipe of an underground fuel storage tank takes the form of a tubular reservoir having an axially flexible bellows shaped side wall. Forces induced by freezing or thawing of the ground in which the reservoir is embedded which would apply strain to the coupling between the reservoir and fill pipe are absorbed by the flexing action of the bellows shaped reservoir. A rigid tubular skirt slidably encloses the bellows portion to prevent concrete or dirt from packing into the concave regions of the bellows.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1987Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Enterprise Brass Works, Inc.Inventors: Leo J. Patent number: 4711277Abstract: A method for the filling of a container with a potable liquid, such as fruit juice, and a filler nozzle for practicing the method. Prior methods for filling containers with potable liquids have often employed a series of nozzles, each discharging a single stream of liquid, falling under the action of gravity, vertically downward through an opening in a nozzle, each nozzle acting in cooperation and being attached to its valve. As the container is filled, both splashing and foaming of the liquid in the container, has often caused problems. According to the method and apparatus of this invention, the potable liquid to be dispensed into a container is directed to the interior surface of the container at a point above its intended fill level. By virtue of this method, foaming and splashing are minimized at each filler nozzle station.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1982Date of Patent: December 8, 1987Assignee: International Paper CompanyInventor: Robert J. Patent number: 4644983Abstract: Apparatus for reducing spillage in connection with a liquid product loading dock. It has a double funnel arrangement with one funnel attached to the first swivel of plural fill pipes which have swivel joints to permit placing the free end into a mobile tank to be filled. That funnel moves with the fill pipes through about one hundred eighty degrees of freedom, and has structure for receiving the free end of the fill pipes after a filling operation. Consequently, run off of product from the fill pipes goes into the funnel. There is a conduit connected to the funnel outlet that moves with it and extends into a second funnel that is coaxial with the product delivery pipe. From there, the run off is returned to a collection tank.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1985Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: Texaco LimitedInventor: Stephen R. Bishop

Patent number: 4204564Abstract: Disclosed is an assembly including a dump tank disposed near the fill pipe for an underground gasoline storage tank at an automobile service station. The tank is normally isolated by a hand valve and a check valve from communication with the storage tank fill pipe, however, when the storage tank has been filled from a transport vehicle, the gasoline in the fill pipe and the flexible delivery hose may be dumped into the dump tank by opening a manually operated valve. The check valve permits gasoline thus dumped to flow from the dump tank back to the storage tank as gasoline is pumped from the storage tank during normal pump operation of the service station.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1978Date of Patent: May 27, 1980Inventor: Lawrence H. Patent number: 4091846Abstract: Fluid is transferred from a reservoir to a tank by means of a pump which pumps fluid through a conduit communicating with the tank and separably coupled to the reservoir. Operation of the pump is governed by a control mechanism that is operable to enable and disable operation of the pump. The control mechanism is connected to an energy source via adjustable switching means which in one of its positions is operable to disable operation of the pump when the level of fluid in the tank reaches a predetermined height, and in another of which it is operable to enable operation of the pump regardless of the fluid level in the tank.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 1977Date of Patent: May 30, 1978Inventor: Paul P.
