Patent number: 6039201Abstract: A container such as a sump having a bottom, at least one wall extending upwardly from the bottom, and a flange connected to the at least one wall and projecting therefrom. The flange preferably has apertures extending partially into the interior portion of the flange from its exterior surface. The flange provides structural rigidity to the container and prevents irregularities from being formed in the walls during manufacture. Preferably, the container is a sump having four lower walls, four upper walls integrally connected to the lower walls by the flange, and four entrance walls integrally connected to the upper walls and defining a mouth for receiving fluids. The flange preferably has an upper surface having upper apertures and a lower surface having lower apertures that are axially aligned with the upper apertures. Pins may utilized during manufacture of the sump by rotational molding to form apertures within the flange and aid in preventing irregularities from being formed.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1997Date of Patent: March 21, 2000Assignee: Delaware Capital Formations, Inc.Inventors: James Kesterman, David Pendleton

Patent number: 5988944Abstract: A tank sump has a one-piece body comprising a hollow base member for collecting fluids leaking from a piping system, the base member having an upper portion and a lower portion, and a hollow riser section having an upper portion and a lower portion, the riser lower portion extending upwardly from the base member upper portion, the riser section having sidewalls with alternately adjacent vertically extending wall portions and outwardly extending, U-shaped grip portions. An integrally formed cover is defined on top of the riser section upper portion. The cover may be cut off from the riser section of the body. A gasket may extend between the cover outer periphery and the outwardly extending grip portion of the riser section, and a mechanism removably secures the cover to the outwardly extending grip portion with the gasket therebetween, in a substantially water resistant sealing manner. The cover may alternately be cut away from the body and discarded.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1998Date of Patent: November 23, 1999Assignee: Advanced Polymer Technology, Inc.Inventor: Andrew Youngs

Patent number: 5983960Abstract: The invention is directed to an oil container repository designed to separately collect used motor oil containers and the residual oil left over within each container so that each can be recycled. The invention, in one embodiment, comprises an upper and a lower compartment. The upper compartment has an opening on the top to receive discarded oil containers. A divider separates the upper compartment with the lower compartment. The divider may have a tilted V shape surface and an opening at the bottom. The opening connects the upper compartment to the lower compartment such that the collected containers remain in the upper compartment as they can not fit through the opening. However, opening is sufficiently large to allow the residual motor oil flow through and into the second compartment. The second compartment in turn has an opening for drainage which will permit the drainage of collected motor oil from said second compartment.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1998Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignee: Carlton HaughInventor: Carlton Haugh

Patent number: 5983962Abstract: A portable fuel dispensing system which eliminates the need for underground storage tanks that are subject to leaks resulting in contamination of the stored fuel, soil and ground water creating costly environmental hazards. A semi-tractor trailer supported fuel receptacle has a plurality of metered fuel dispensers along the sides thereof allowing several customers to park along side the trailer and fuel their vehicles. The trailer may be taken to a central location for filling and then transported to a convenient retail location for dispensing the fuel to customers' vehicles. When empty, the trailer is returned to the central location for refuelling. During this return trip, the tank may be connected to a fuel/air inlet of the tractor so fuel vapor remaining in the tank may be burned rather than escaping into the atmosphere. The system is a completely closed system with no venting of fumes into the atmosphere.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1997Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Inventor: Nolan P. Gerardot

Patent number: 5979513Abstract: A fluid spillage control apparatus is connected to a fluid tank which has a fill opening and a ventilation opening. The fluid spillage control apparatus comprises a fluid holding chamber having a vent opening for venting vapor therefrom. The fluid holding chamber also has a conduit communicating with a fluid tank ventilation opening for passage of excess fluid from the fluid tank into the fluid holding chamber. The conduit is aparallel with the longitudinal axis of the fluid holding chamber so that the fluid holding chamber can be oriented in both a first position wherein the fluid holding chamber longitudinal axis is oriented vertically and a second position wherein the fluid holding chamber longitudinal axis is oriented horizontally. In addition, an auditory signal device communicates with the vent opening and produces an auditory signal upon passage of vented vapor from the fluid holding chamber.Type: GrantFiled: May 13, 1996Date of Patent: November 9, 1999Inventor: Randolf W. Patent number: 5975132Abstract: An underground secondary containment system that is preassembled to a large extent at a manufacturing site prior to shipping to the site of installation. In this manner, the time expended at the site of installation in installing the underground secondary containment system is reduced. The underground secondary containment system includes a double walled fuel storage tank having isolated adjoining compartments for storing two different grades of fuel. A pair of dispenser sumps are mounted on the fuel storage tank at opposite ends thereof. A pair of tank sumps are mounted on the fuel storage tanks above the corresponding compartments. Each tank sump is connected to each of the dispenser sumps via flexible piping which extends along the exterior of the fuel storage tank. In this manner, two different grades of gasoline can be provided to each dispenser without utilizing piping disposed internally of the fuel storage tanks.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1996Date of Patent: November 2, 1999Assignee: Total Containment, Inc.Inventor: Bentley Francis Gleeson

Patent number: 5971039Abstract: An automated marine refueling facility for effecting marine fueling transactions includes a buoyant platform that is adapted to float above a water level in a body of water such as a lake and a storage tank that is mounted to said platform for storing a quantity of fuel. A pumping system is provided for permitting a customer to refuel a boat from fuel that is extracted from said storage tank. The pumping system is grounded so as to avoid electrical discharges. This facility is advantageous in that it permits a fueling transaction to be performed without an excess of unprotected piping between the storage tank and the boat, thereby reducing the potential for accidents and marine pollution.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1997Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: U-Fuel, Inc.Inventor: R. Patent number: 5967174Abstract: The patent discloses apparatus for removing and containing spills occurring upon filling of a delivery tank truck. The spill catching basin and more particularly the drains mounted to the tops of tanks are modified to deliver liquid spilled into the basin to a single outlet along the side of the truck. A receptacle, such as a buried tank is provided to receive the runoff from the truck. Provided for connection to the outlet is a fitting which may be releasably clamped to the outside of the outlet. The fitting is coupled to the buried tank by a flexible hose and a slip coupling between the hose and the fitting.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1998Date of Patent: October 19, 1999Inventor: William David MacDonald

Patent number: 5967200Abstract: A fluid catch bag sized and configured for placement below an engine, and particularly an inboard engine on a boat, includes a floor, side walls and end walls formed of a flexible, liquid impervious material and surrounding an interior fluid collection chamber. The upper peripheral edge zones of the side walls and end walls are provided with eyelets for attaching the catch bag in operative position below the engine so that the walls extend generally vertically and upwardly from the floor in surrounding relation to the engine. A collapsible bladder interconnects in fluid flow communication with a lower portion of the collection chamber for containing the engine fluids which drip into the catch bag. A shut-off valve allows for disconnection of the bladder in order to dispose of the fluid contents contained therein, while preventing fluids within the chamber of the catch bag from spilling when the bladder is disconnected.Type: GrantFiled: December 10, 1997Date of Patent: October 19, 1999Inventor: Thomas W.
