    Abstract: A tool, system, and method for shaping a wooden workpiece. The system includes a lathe, a toolrest, and a woodturning tool for removing material from the workpiece. The tool includes a handle with a shaft extending longitudinally outwardly therefrom. A cutter is provided on an end of the shaft. The shaft includes a longitudinally-extending bottom surface and a longitudinally-extending side surface. The side surface extends laterally outwardly from the bottom surface and at an obtuse angle relative thereto. Each of the bottom and side surfaces is flat and is separately brought into contact with the toolrest on the lathe to steady the shaft and use the cutter on the workpiece. The orientation of the cutter is changed between a first position and second position depending on which of the bottom surface or side surface contacts the toolrest.

    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a connecting rod is provided. The method includes the steps of (1) forming, on a long rod material, a rotation transmitting portion having a non-circular cross section; (2) cutting the rod material to provide the rotation transmitting portion at each of both ends; and (3) forming, by cutting work, a small-diameter column portion and a tapered portion at a first end of the cut rod material from a tip-end side. The small-diameter column portion has a diameter smaller than a diameter of the rotation transmitting portion. The tapered portion is provided continuously from the small-diameter column portion and gradually increases in diameter. The rotation transmitting portion is provided continuously from the tapered portion.

    Abstract: A wood working tool for cutting flutes on a curved profile, used with a wood lathe. The wood working tool includes a vertical mast secured to a base. A cutting tool holder is attached to the mast and can be connected at different positions to adjust the usable height to accommodate different size lathes. The tool holder supports a cutting tool such as router. The tool holder also supports a depth control bar with a roller at a working end of the control bar. The control bar is positioned such that the roller is near a cutter of the cutting tool. The depth control bar can be adjusted to allow for the cutting tool to cut a surface at a variety of depths. Moving the wood working tool along the length of the turning with the depth control bar engaged allows for cutting of the flute.

A carriage assembly is adapted to slide between each spindle spinning assembly. The carriage assembly has a blade mechanism mounted thereon for engaging a front surface of the spindle secured between the spindle assemblies. The carriage assembly further includes a carriage motor functioning to move the carriage in a forward direction upon the receipt of a forward signal and move the carriage in a reverse direction upon the receipt of a reverse signal only when the carriage motor is actuated.

    Abstract: A copying cutting device for wood lathes including two securing stems, two form securing devices each transversely mounted at the bottom end of each securing stem, a guide track device mounted above the securing stems, a cutter mounting device having a cutter mounted thereon screwably provided at the bottom side of the guide track device, and a form tracing device screwably disposed at the rear end of the cutter. The forms securing device positions a copy, and a tracing rod of the form tracing device urges against the tracing edge of the copy. The cutter slides in the cutter mounting device, which in turn slides in the guide track device. The cutter cuts the workpiece following the contour of the copy with the help of the tracing rod.

To increase offset cutting ability several different lengths of a detachable and hinged arm assembly (40) are used. Arm assembly can be fixed or moved to three different positions relative to boring bar (FIG. 2) by manipulating a hand knob (36). A moveable and replaceable cutting tool (198) is held at the end of the arm assembly. A wall thickness caliper system (44) which ends in a tip (130) of some flexible material to allow operator appraisal of the internally disposed cutting tool's position.

A recess in the top of the body block intersects the borehole, forming an aperture into which a cutting blade extends substantially tangential to the curvature of the borehole. A cradle attached to the body block includes a pair of parallel wing-like members spaced apart by spreaders at each end of the wings, which are pivotably mounted to the body block. Each wing has a notch formed in the upper edge thereof that is semicircular in the deepest part and on pivoting the wings the deepest part of the notches can be substantially aligned with the borehole.

    Abstract: A duplicating device for use on a wood lathe includes a baseplate for mounting behind a lathe on a table carrying the lathe, a mirror pivot ally mounted on the baseplate, and a template carrier on the baseplate between the mirror and the lathe. A template, e.g. a finished spindle is mounted on the carrier, and a blank is mounted in the lathe. By visually aligning the blank and template on a line perpendicular to the mirror, the blank can be turned to reproduce the template design accurately.

    Abstract: A duplicator attachment for a woodturning lathe which provides the same freedom and control of the cutting action as in normal, freehand, turning operations, and enables duplication of inside contours, and even bowls. The duplicator also enables the pattern to be supported on the same vertical center as the workpiece and above the workpiece, rather than below or to the side of the workpiece, thereby permitting the full swing of the lathe to be used. The duplicator attachment provides a carriage to bring the cutting tool and a tracer, respectively, against the workpiece and pattern. The carriage has three sections which provide for movement of the cutting tool and tracer longitudinally along the center line of the lathe, laterally perpendicular to the center line of the lathe, and rotationally about an axis mutually perpendicular to the directions of the lateral and longitudinal movements.

An upstanding tool post near one end of the long base, a pair of upstanding follower pins spaced longitudinally on opposite sides of and closely adjacent the tool post, and a pair of handles arranged for selective attachment to the base on one side or the other of the tool post adapt the tool holder to axial or face plate turning operations and a conveniently detachable plate overlying the spaced horizontal surfaces provides a continuous surface when face plate turning.

The preferred embodiment gives the tool operator complete and safe control of the tool along with a self-wiping base to preclude hopping of the tool or other interference with normal tool operations.
