Many-spindle Lathes Patents (Class 142/4)
  • Patent number: 6629549
Abstract: The present invention consists of a lathe attachment for installation on a portable bandsaw mill, for turning round shafts from wood blocks on the portable bandsaw mill. The lathe attachment has an elongated chassis, a tailstock and a headstock mounted on opposite ends of the chassis for holding and rotating a wood block along the chassis. Bindings are provided to retain the chassis to the cross beams of the portable bandsaw mill. In another aspect of the invention, a number of symmetrical facets are firstly sawed along the wood block prior to turning the wood block. The turning of a round shaft on the bandsaw mill is preferably effected while the alignment of the wood block or shaft makes an acute angle with the direction of movement of the bandsaw head.

  • Patent number: 5535652
Abstract: The invention comprises an automatic lathe apparatus adapted to be programmed for automatically cutting work pieces into contours with a pair of radial saw blades. The apparatus has an elongated frame with a center drive mechanism movably mounted on the frame intermediate the ends of the frame to accommodate variable length work pieces. The center drive mechanism provides opposing drive spindles independently driven to engage a pair of work pieces at one of their ends and drive them thereby. A pair of tail stock spindles are movably mounted and adjustable at the ends of the frame and have air operated cylinders to drive the spindles into engagement with the other ends of the work pieces. A screw operated platform is power driven by a screw to drive longitudinally along the length of the frame.

  • Patent number: 4372355
Abstract: A wood turning lathe is provided with a centrally located head and tail stock mounting apparatus which in combination with head and tail stocks on the opposite ends of the lathe define two turning stations. The mounting apparatus includes a supporting block unit having head and tail stock work centers rotatable about a common axis with the head stock center being held against axial movement. The tail stock center is hydraulically operated to be selectively reciprocable. This reciprocable movement is provided by means of a hydraulic power cylinder in the supporting block unit having a sealed chamber which receives a piston mounted on a rotatable shaft which carries the tail stock center. The piston divides the chamber into two variable volume compartments, two ports in the block unit being provided for admitting an exhausting pressure fluid to and from such compartments, respectively.
