  • Patent number: 8708624
Abstract: A chip deflector repositionable as needed relative to a bottom work contacting surface of a hand-held power router. The chip deflector can be positioned in a shielding location below the bottom work contacting surface of the router. When the chip deflector is in the shielding position and the router is held so that the deflector is between the cutter and the worker it will deflect debris away from the operator. When not useful the chip deflector can instantly be repositioned to a non-shielding location flush with or above the bottom work contacting surface of the router. When in the non-shielding location no portion of the chip deflector protrudes beyond the bottom work contacting surface of the router thereby allowing the router to perform all basic routing without obstruction. Repositioning requires no tools or downtime plus safety and comfort are enhanced. Embodiments may be provided as original equipment or aftermarket retrofits.

  • Patent number: 7490642
Abstract: A router depth adjustment mechanism for minimizing rapid course depth adjustment for standard and plunge routers. Routers with rapid or course adjustment mechanisms may permit a router motor housing to drop suddenly, if the user is inattentive. Sudden adjustments may result in damage to the router and potentially contact the user. The mechanism of the present invention includes a threaded shaft and a biased thread engaging member which may be disengaged for rapid adjustment. A restraining device and/or a break may be included to minimize the rate of change.

  • Patent number: 7467651
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a quick attach and detach mechanism for a tool attachment such as a router attachment for a router. The attachment system includes a mounting adapter which may be integrally formed with the router housing or attached to the router housing as a bolt-on plate. The system works by vertically installing the tool attachment with the mounting adapter and then twisting to secure the tool attachment to the mounting adapter. A rotational lock is provided to prevent the tool attachment from inadvertently backing off or coming loose. This lock can be manually actuated to allow for quick detachment when desired. The tool attachment system is shown in association with a router which has several disclosed benefits, however there may also be applications of the system in other types of tool attachments for which coverage is also sought.

Abstract: A variable depth router and base assembly can include a ring-type, depth-adjustment mechanism. The base assembly can be a two-piece base wherein one piece is disposed inside the other. One of the pieces can include an annular lip or recess that can cooperate with levers on the adjustment ring to secure the router to the base assembly. The two-piece base assembly can facilitate the manufacture of the base assembly, can allow the use of different materials for different portions of the base assembly, and can provide a more economical base assembly. The use of differing materials can facilitate the using of more wear-resistant materials where needed while avoiding the costs of such materials in locations where it is not needed. The two-piece base assembly may allow various features to be economically incorporated into one of the pieces, thereby facilitating the manufacturing and assembly of the base assembly.

  • Patent number: 7455088
Abstract: A hand router has a housing (12) and a tool (22) situated in the housing in a rotary drivable fashion, which it is possible to operate in the intended manner by means of a suction air flow, in particular by means of a vacuum cleaner. The hand router is particularly powerful because a radial turbine wheel (32) equipped with intake and outlet gratings (44, 48) is used as the drive. The housing (12) is made up of tube-like sections (13, 14, 15), in particular that can be grasped by an operating hand, which it is possible to connect with one another by means of flanges (36, 38).

A gear shaft is horizontally mounted on the base member and a worm shaft is vertically mounted on the base member. A link gear that engages the toothed bar and a lock gear are both mounted on the gear shaft. The lock gear is axially movable between a first position and a second position and has a tendency to be in the first position. When the lock gear is in the first position, the lock gear engages a worm mounted on the worm shaft and is circumferentially fixed relative to the link gear. When the lock gear is in the second position, the lock gear disengages the worm and is rotatable relative to the link gear.
