Patent number: 6824624Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for oxygen cutting pieces of steel, in which a cutter member (5) is positioned above a top face of the piece to be cut, and trimmer and spray members (10, 11) are positioned beneath the piece to be cut, said members being carried by a support blade which passes through the cut slot. According to the invention, at least one pressurized fluid (22) is projected directly into the cut slot (1.3) and into the portion thereof that lies between the cutting front and the blade-shaped support of the cutter and spray members, said jet forming a barrier protecting said blade-shaped support against particle projections during forward advance of the support along the cut slot (1.3). This eliminates the risk of forward advance of the blade-shaped support in the cut slot encountering any obstacles, thereby making it possible to implement cutting speeds that are very high.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 2002Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Inventors: Guy Prioretti, Véronique Prioretti, Françoise Prioretti-Hacking, Jean-Michel Prioretti

Patent number: 6783605Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for oxygen-cutting thick pieces of steel at high speed. In accordance with the invention an oxygen-cutting torch (30) held at a predetermined height above the piece (1) to be cut and a slot torch (20) comprising at least one blade nozzle (25) that travels inside the cut slot (1.3) are moved synchronously. The blade nozzle (25) emits at least one jet of heating and/or oxygen-cutting fluids through its leading edge to strike the heating edge of the slot where it combines with the jet of oxygen-cutting fluids emitted by the oxygen-cutting torch (30) to form a leading edge (1.4) of the slot having a profile in the form of a broken line.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2002Date of Patent: August 31, 2004Inventors: Guy Prioretti, Véronique Prioretti, Francoise Prioretti-Hacking, Jean-Michel Prioretti

Patent number: 5944915Abstract: A novel cutting nozzle assembly for a postmixed oxygen-fuel gas torch is disclosed. The nozzle assembly includes a cylindrical shroud which surrounds and extends away from the gas discharge orifices in the gas discharge end of the cutting nozzle. The cylindrical shroud has the advantage of producing a tighter gas stream and of promoting a more thorough mixing of the preheat oxygen and the fuel gas to provide a hotter, more compact flame which produces a more parallel-sided cut through metal workpieces. The cutting tip therefore conserves metal as well as cutting gases. It also cuts faster than prior art postmixed cutting nozzles.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1997Date of Patent: August 31, 1999Assignee: Oxy-Arc Repairs & Services Ltd.Inventor: Claude Bissonnette

Patent number: 5891266Abstract: A method and system for cutting hub bores in metal railroad wheels is disclosed. The system includes a lead and second torch for cutting the hub bores. In the method, the lead torch is moved to an initial position above the wheel. The lead torch is energized and moved to cut through a part of the wheel. The second torch is moved to an initial position above the wheel. The second torch is then energized and moved to cut through a part of the wheel. The entire hub bore is cut in the wheel. Additional torches may also be provided. A gantry system for supporting the lead and second torches is disclosed. The gantry system includes lead and second linear movement means arranged parallel to each other and a third linear movement means perpendicular to the lead and second linear movement means. The gantry system also includes a lead torch carriage means for supporting the lead torch and a second torch carriage means for supporting the second torch.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1997Date of Patent: April 6, 1999Assignee: Amsted Industries IncorporatedInventors: Neil E. Patent number: 5792281Abstract: A post-mixed cutting torch selectively operable in a pilot mode and a cutting mode is provided by the present invention. The control body includes a fuel passage and an oxygen passage which is divided into a preheat oxygen supply branch and a cutting oxygen supply branch. A fuel flow valve is provided in the fuel passage and an oxygen flow valve is provided in the cutting oxygen supply branch of the oxygen passage. Advantageously, an interconnecting passage extends between the preheat oxygen supply branch and the cutting oxygen supply branch. Accordingly, the torch is operable in a preheat/cutting mode wherein oxygen is directed through both the preheat and cutting oxygen apertures of a cutting nozzle. In addition, each of the fuel and oxygen flow valves is associated with a bypass channel which allows the torch to be operable in a fuel saving pilot mode wherein oxygen is directed through both the preheat and cutting oxygen apertures of a cutting nozzle.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1997Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: The ESAB Group, Inc.Inventor: Gregory William Diehl

Patent number: 5683821Abstract: The workpiece is obtained by cutting a metal product by oxygen cutting. An oxygen cutting jet is sent onto a preheated cutting zone of the product. A peripheral sleeve of additional gas is formed around the oxygen cutting jet so as to send, into the cutting zone, a coaxial double jet constituted by the oxygen jet surrounded by the sleeve of gas at a pressure of less than 1 bar. The flow rate and the pressure of the cutting oxygen and of the additional gas are regulated separately. The invention also relates to an oxygen-cutting device for implementing the method and to the metal part obtained.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1996Date of Patent: November 4, 1997Assignee: Creusot-Loire IndustrieInventors: Dominique Vial, Gerard Defay, Michel Blanchet
