Patent number: 6112359Abstract: A broom for cleaning a surface having a bristle cleaning mechanism. The broom has a handle with a grasping end and a cleaning end. At the cleaning end is a comb member having a plurality of tines. The comb member pivots into and out of engagement with the bristles as a sleeve or handle is moved along the broom handle. The tines engage the bristles as the grasping portion is pushed downward such that the tines push trapped dirt and dust out from the bristle ends. As the slidable sleeve is pulled back into its original position, the tines disengage from the bristles and return to their original position.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1999Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Inventor: Bryan Kaleta

Patent number: 6112362Abstract: A brush is combined with a flexible netting that is placed over the brush bristles and pulled downward so that the netting is at the base of the bristles. The netting is flexible so that no guide is needed to place the netting at the base of the bristles. The netting has an outer periphery of elastic material so that the edge of the netting will be drawn around the back surface of the brush, holding the netting in place. The netting may have an opening through which the brush handle is extended, or securing straps may be used to loop around the back of the handle to help secure the netting in place. The straps may be secured together with, for example, snaps, a buckle, or a hook and loop fastener. The netting is removed to clean the brush and then is placed back on the brush to accumulate debris until the brush needs cleaning again. Replacement netting is inexpensive and may be used if a net becomes torn or unusable.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1998Date of Patent: September 5, 2000Inventors: Nancy B. Parko, Joy E. Parko

Patent number: 5915435Abstract: An improved dusting device includes a handle, a bristle head, bristles extending transversely from the bristle head, and a cover for radially collapsing the bristles during shipping and retail display. The bristle head receives and supports a plurality of bristles, wherein each bristle includes a first end attached to the handle first end and a terminal second end for engaging particles. Each bristle is capable of retaining its original shape after prolonged deformation, as they are comprised of elongated strands of polyvinyl chloride. The invention includes a bristle cover adapted for use with the dust mop during storage, shipping and retail display. After assembly of the mop, the cover slides over the bristle head and bristles, and compresses the bristles into a compact formation, which reduces the effective shipping and storage volume of the device, and allows a greater number of dusting devices to be stored in a standard sized shipping box than prior art dusting devices.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 1996Date of Patent: June 29, 1999Assignee: Wilen Acquisition CorporationInventors: Joseph M. Patent number: 5913348Abstract: An extendable-bristle brush having a hollow, tubular handle containing a folded bundle of fibers, the free ends of the fibers extending from an open end of the handle as bristles. The bundle is formed by folding a half-bundle of fibers about a hooked drawpiece and drawing the fold of the bundle into the handle so that both ends of each fiber protrude from the same end of the tubular handle to form the bristles of the brush. Folding of the bundle creates a bulge in the bundle which is slightly larger than the inner diameter of the tubular handle. Drawing the bundle into the handle compresses the bulge, resulting in a holding force which frictionally locks the bundle within the handle. The bundle may be advanced by pulling out the exposed bristles. As the bundle is repeatedly pulled out and cut off for additional uses, the holding force does not change significantly with shortening of the bundle or the handle.Type: GrantFiled: November 21, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Inventor: Robert C.
