  • Patent number: 8713755
Abstract: An insert assembly for an applicator is built from two semi-cylindrical retention jaws connected by a living hinge. Each of the semi-cylindrical retention jaws has a plurality of stake pins, while the first semi-cylindrical retention jaw has a locator receptacle and the second semi-cylindrical retention jaw has a locator insert. An insert is placed between the two retention jaws, which then close to secure the insert between the retention jaws. The locator receptacle receives the locator insert from the second semi-cylindrical retention jaw, helping to align the two retention jaws. The plurality of stake pins impale the insert, holding it in place. In addition to being secured by the stake pins, the insert is supported by an interior ridge. The insert assembly can then be slid into a barrel sleeve, held in place by a press fit or by a removable mounting system, such as a lug mount.

  • Patent number: 7503716
Abstract: A writing instrument includes an elongate body having opposed first and second ends, a longitudinal axis and a bore therein extending from the first end. A marking body, such as one having lead or a colored material, extends from the first end and is seated in the bore, while a connector is coupled to the second end. An eraser, such as a rubber eraser, is coupled to the connector and is configured to erase markings made by the marking body. The eraser includes a flat surface that is configured to prevent the writing instrument from rolling about the axis down an inclined surface contacting the elongate body. The flat surface may be oriented on a plane that is substantially parallel to the axis. The flat surface may also include a dimension perpendicular to the axis that is larger than another dimension of the elongate body which is also perpendicular to the axis.

  • Patent number: 6935799
Abstract: In a stick-like object receiving member having safety precautions, which receives a stick-like object, a sufficient air passage is secured without exerting an influence on the size of the stick-like object or the receiving member. An eraser receiving member 16, which is the stick-like object receiving member, includes a cylindrical side portion 16b which engages with at least a part of the outer peripheral surface of an eraser 13, and surrounds at least a part of the outer peripheral surface of the eraser 13, and a bottom portion 16a which closes one end of the cylindrical side portion 16b. A slit 16e is formed in the cylindrical side portion 16b and bottom portion 16a so as to penetrate the cylindrical side portion 16b and bottom portion 16a in the axial direction, and the slit 16e serves as an air passage.

  • Patent number: 6547465
Abstract: A pencil has a fixed non-replaceable eraser and a moveable sleeve. The fixed non-replaceable eraser is elongated to provide a larger eraser to pencil ratio in order to have more erase cycles per write cycles. The moveable sleeve can be moved to selectively expose a portion of the eraser. A ferrule couples the pencil body and the eraser together and provides an outer surface to engage an inner surface of the moveable sleeve. In one embodiment, a threaded female slot in the outer surface of the ferrule engages a male threaded tab in the inner surface of the sleeve. In another embodiment, a plurality of concentric slots in the outer surface of the ferrule engage a tab in the inner surface of the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5774931
Abstract: In a pencil having a central lead, provided at its top end with an eraser mounted in a ferrule fixed on the body of the pencil, both the ferrule and the peripheral body surrounding the lead are made of thermoplastic materials that are compatible, and the bottom of the ferrule is fixed to the top end of the pencil by localized interpenetration of the thermoplastic materials in at least one ultrasonic weld zone. The material of the peripheral body of the pencil is preferably expanded so as to have a relative density of about 0.5 to 0.6, and the top end of the body includes a setback in which the density has been increased, locally. The ferrule includes a shoulder on the outside face of its bottom, the shoulder being annular in shape and forming an energy director for ultrasonic welding.

  • Patent number: 5207522
Abstract: This invention is to a writing tool such as mechanical pencil or a ballpoint pen in which a writing shaft having a head member is inserted in an outer sleeve in such a manner that the head member projects from the outer sleeve. A stair or step and a spiral groove are provided on the forward inner surface and the rearward inner surface of a tubular cap, respectively, with an inside diameter of the rear part of the spiral groove being larger. A bearing part is brought into contact with a lead tank provided inside a forward art of the tubular part so that the forward part of the outer sleeve is movable in the axial direction and is locked in the turning direction against a rearward inner surface of the outer sleeve. The rearward part of the tubular body is provided with a slit, holding pieces of a stick-shaped object holder slidably inserted in said slit. A stick-shaped object is held by the holding pieces, and the projection is provided on each holder engaged with the spiral groove of the tubular cap.

  • Patent number: 4352580
Abstract: A knock-out type mechanical pencil has a supporting rod mounted with an eraser at its rear end and axially slidably engaged within the interior of a cylindrical knock-button. A tubularly cylindrical weight is axially slidably engaged around the supporting rod. A cylindrical magnet is axially magnetized and secured to the inner peripheral surface of the knock-button. An annularly inwardly raised guide portion is formed on the inner peripheral surface of the knock-button for guiding the weight to the axial line of the knock-button when the weight is axially slidably dropped downwardly toward the writing tip of the pencil. To protrude and fix an eraser from the rear end of the tubular cylindrical body, the rear end of the pencil is tilted downward. To automatically contain or retract the eraser in the knock-button, the writing tip of the pencil is directed downwardly in writing state.
