  • Patent number: 8453690
Abstract: A tire chain tightener for use on automotive, truck, or other vehicle traction chains and similar devices. The tire chain tightener has an length of elastic material with a hook attached to each end. Intermediate hooks are spaced along the elastic material between the two ends. One of the ends may be uniquely marked with instructions for correct installation of the tire chain tightener. When correctly installed, a tire chain tightener with N+1 hooks will form a symmetrical N pointed star inscribed in the circumference of the tire chains. The star is further centered about the tire. • Patent number: 5785783
Abstract: A tire chain assembly including two stays hinged at one end on a housing and supporting wall chains which hold tread chains in place on the tread of the tire when they are pulled tight as the stays are drawn together by a resilient linkage. Arms or resilient linkages control displacement and vibration of the stays when the wheel is moving. The device enables gripping equipment to be fitted quickly and easily and is suitable for use on snow-covered, muddy, sandy, or vegetation-covered terrain.

  • Patent number: 5284196
Abstract: A new and improved apparatus for tightening a chain installed on a tire that is mounted on a wheel of a motor vehicle includes a hub assembly and a plurality of tension assemblies. Each tension assembly includes a first end for connecting to the hub assembly, a tensioning element connected to the first end, and a second end connected to the tensioning element. The second end is connected to a portion of the chain, such that the hub assembly and the tension assemblies exert tension on the chain in a radial direction toward the hub assembly. More specifically, the tension assemblies are attached to the hub assembly and the chain in pairs, and the tension assemblies of each pair are arranged in opposed relation. That is, the first ends of each pair are in opposed relation with respect to the hub assembly, and the second ends of each pair are in opposed relation with respect to the chain. At least one of the tension assemblies further includes a threaded shaft movable within a sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5070923
Abstract: Antiskid apparatus comprising a first doglegged linkage of two rods which are pivotally connected together on one end and a second doglegged linkage of two rods which are pivotally connected together on one end, the linkages being pivotally connected in the middle of the respective rods to form a pantograph. A circular support member is pivotally mounted on the open end of each of the rods, and a thin-plate-shaped gripping member is fixed to each of the support members. Each of the gripping members comprises a ground contact portion that contacts the tire tread and covers at least a part of the width of the tread and a mounting portion that contacts the tire sidewall. In one embodiment, the linkage is held in a specified form by means of a holder, and the apparatus is mounted on the tire by securing hooks of tighteners in positions corresponding to the tire wheel holes, the hooks being provided at the top of the tighteners.

  • Patent number: 4974653
Abstract: The device includes a flat rigid rectangular frame forming a pair of opposed parallel sleeves. Four traction elements, each having shank and U-shaped hook portions, are provided for telescoping movement of the shanks within the sleeves, to thereby position the hooks transversely across the tread of the tire. A cable and traveling block/threaded shaft arrangement is provided to simultaneously contract all four traction elements at substantially the same rate into gripping engagement with the tire treads. Crossbars, extending chordally on the inboard side of the tire connect the inner ends of the hooks and secure the device onto the tire. The shanks can rotate within the sleeves so that rotation of the tire can twist the hooks into a slanted condition whereby they more tightly grip the tire.

  • Patent number: 4862936
Abstract: A traction-enhancing device that is releasably attached to vehicle tires. A rigid base member having a central core and plural arms radiating therefrom is placed into overlying relation to the side of a tire. Plural flexible cords and rigid rod members in axial alignment therewith interconnect a like number of tread-overlying road-gripping members to a capstan mounted centrally of the base member. Rotation of the capstan draws the road-contacting members radially inwardly into tight-fitting engagement with the tire and effectively creates an enhanced tread. Counter rotation of the capstan enables the road-contacting members to be swung away from the tread so that the device can be removed from the tire.
