    Abstract: Tire cord having enough high tensile strength, high initial modulus, and high fatigue resistance required for radial tire and belted bias tire can be obtained from polyvinyl alcohol polymer. Said cord is constituted by multifilament yarns composed of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer having a degree of polymerization of at least 2000, having a tensile strength of 15 g/d or more and an initial modulus of 250 g/d or more, and undergoing substantially no fusion between single filaments. It has cord properties of not less than 8.5 g/d in tensile strength, 0.5 to 2.2% in middle degree of elongation (MDE), and 0.2 to 2.0% in dry heat shrinkage factor (.DELTA.S).

When the core layer is wound in the same direction as the intermediate layer, the pitches of these layers differ in such a manner that the ratio between the difference in the values of these two pitches and the larger value of these two pitches is at least equal to 0.30. In the intermediate layer the axis of each cord is arranged along a helix such that the ratio between the radius of curvature of said helix and the diameter of said cord is less than 75.

In this case, the maximum preforming ratio possible for the wire members is 1.65 and the minimum preforming ratio possible for the wire members is 1.05. The dip cord is prepared by treating a nylon 6 and/or nylon 66 cord yarn with an adhesive wherein at least one of the following processes (i) and (ii) is employed: (i) the adhesive treatment is carried out under elongation of at least 3%, and (ii) as the adhesive, a liquid mixture of a resorcinol/formaldehyde (R/F) condensate and a rubber latex is used, in which at least 20 wt. % of the condensate has a R/F molar ratio of 1/1.9-1/1.
