Patent number: 5427166Abstract: The weight, space and convenience advantages of a run-flat tire can be substantial. This is especially true for the urban-economy car or family type vehicles which have limited space available for a spare tire and inadequate space for the removed flat tire. These vehicles also have higher comfort requirements that must be addressed. The mini-spare solution to the flat tire problem has very limited performance capabilities. Other solutions include major modifications in the rim and/or the tire, which are not cost effective or compatible with a conversion to standard tires on the same rims. The run-flat tire of this invention includes thickened sidewall portions, a belt package with a cap ply, lower sidewall rubber support portions, a specially designed bead seat area with a rim seat ply and three carcass layers. The classical problems of inflated vs. deflated performance tradeoffs in ride comfort, handling, radial stiffness and endurance of the tire are substantially improved.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 1994Date of Patent: June 27, 1995Assignee: Michelin Recherche et Technique S.A.Inventor: Walter L. Willard, Jr.

Patent number: 4962803Abstract: A pneumatic tire (10) comprising a pair of annular beads (12,12') spaced from one another with a liner (20) extending between the tire beads. A reinforcement ply (24) and a barrier ply (26) are provided extending between the beads and a circumferentially inextensible belt assembly (28) is positioned in the crown region (30) of the tire. The reinforcement ply has parallel cords (27) of aromatic polyamide material or cables of steel and the barrier ply is made from a material having a ply modulus of elasticity substantially less than that of the reinforcement ply. The parallel cords or cables of the barruier ply preferably are at an angle (.alpha.) different than the angle (.beta.) of the parallel cords or cables of the reinforcement ply.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 1985Date of Patent: October 16, 1990Assignee: The Goodyear Tire & Rubber CompanyInventor: Thomas N. Patent number: 4896710Abstract: Pneumatic radial tires for load vehicles include carcass plies reinforced with composite twisted filaments having a core-sheath structure, the core being made of polyester and the sheath being made of polyamide. The sheath accounts for 40-60 wt % of the entire core-sheath structure, and the coefficient of twist K of the cords satisfies the condition 1.22<K<2.24 and the initial modulus Md (g/d) of the cords satisfies the condition Md>45.0.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1988Date of Patent: January 30, 1990Assignee: Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd.Inventor: Kietsu Maeda

Patent number: 4852625Abstract: A tire for a two-wheeled vehicle, particularly, a bicycle intended for a racing purposes having an improved running stability, superior durability and impact resistance, and reduced weight. The tire includes a carcass layer formed by arranging cord belts with a rubber paste coated thereon in such a manner that the cords of the cord belts cross each other. A tube is fitted to the inside of the carcass layer, and a rubber tread portion is bonded to the outer periphery of the carcass layer. The cord belt is produced in bias form with alternately arranged cords superior in durability and impact resistance and cords superior in adhesion with rubber. The two types of cords may be equal in number, or a majority of one of the two types of cords employed, depending upon the precise application of the tire and the conditions under which it is intended for use.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1988Date of Patent: August 1, 1989Assignee: Mitsubishi Belting Ltd.Inventors: Satoshi Mashimo, Tatsuya Kitajima, Masayuki Tanaka, Shinji Kuramoto
