Patent number: 9004127Abstract: A non-pneumatic tire for supporting a load by working in tension comprising a generally annular inner surface, a generally annular outer ring, and an interconnected web having a plurality of web elements and comprising a plurality of generally polygonal openings. Web elements are sized, oriented and comprised of a material that facilitates buckling when subjected to a compressive load. By buckling, those elements in a deformed portion of the tire between a hub and a footprint region where the tire contacts a surface may assume a significantly reduced portion of the load, if any. This causes web elements in other portions of the interconnected web to operate in tension to support the load. With the portion of the tire in the footprint region not bearing a significant portion of the load, non-pneumatic tire may exhibit a more comfortable ride subject to less noise and vibration and improved handling capabilities.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2011Date of Patent: April 14, 2015Assignee: Polaris Industries Inc.Inventors: Ali Manesh, Mike Tercha, Olukemi Ayodeji, Brian Anderson, Brian J. Patent number: 8104524Abstract: A non-pneumatic tire for supporting a load by working in tension comprising a generally annular inner surface, a generally annular outer ring, and an interconnected web having a plurality of web elements and comprising a plurality of generally polygonal openings. Web elements are sized, oriented and comprised of a material that facilitates buckling when subjected to a compressive load. Patent number: 5265659Abstract: The relatively harsh "ride" of a non-pneumatic tire ("NPT") is greatly improved by a ring of elastomeric material referred to as a "ride-enhancing insert" ("RI"). The RI is pre-positioned on the outer surface of a wheel rim on which the NPT is to be molded of elastomeric material, most preferably a polyurethane, which is peculiarly well-suited to survive normal use on various vehicles, particularly as a replacement for a conventional spare tire, or "minispare" in an automobile. The RI is surprisingly tolerant of stress and heat loads generated by operation of the NPT/RI. The RI has a large effect on the spring rate of the NPT when deflected over a cleat, and a reduction in spring rate when deflected over a smooth laminar surface. This is of particular importance since the deflection over a cleat is where the improvement in ride is most noticeable.Type: GrantFiled: March 18, 1992Date of Patent: November 30, 1993Assignee: Uniroyal Goodrich Licensing Services, Inc.Inventors: Scott R.
