  • Patent number: 5971047
Abstract: A tire has a carcass reinforcement (1) which, when viewed in meridian secn, is wound in each bead B about a bead wire (2) coated with a rubber mix, passing from the heel to the toe of the bead B, the upturn (10) being located in a profile (3) of rubber mix in the form of a wedge defined by two sides (31 and 32) coming from an apex A located beneath the section of the coated bead wire (2). Advantageously the upturn (10) surrounds in its entirety the contour of the profile (3), forming either a first radially inner side (32), a lateral side (30), and a final radially outer side (31) or a first radially outer side (31), a lateral side (30), and a final radially inner side (32). The tire may form with different rims J high-performance assemblies in the event of travel at low or zero pressure, permitting simple mounting of the tires and optionally of bearing supports S for the tire tread on the rims J.

  • Patent number: 4836261
Abstract: A take-apart wheel rim and disc assembly for use in a safety tire and wheel assembly which includes a pneumatic tubeless tire. The wheel includes an inboard rim part, a wheel mounting disc having an outer marginal flange telescoped into and secured to the inboard rim part, the disc flange having an outer surface protruding axially outboard beyond and clear of the inboard rim part. An outboard rim part telescopically received from an axially outboard direction over the disc flange, an O-ring seal disposed between the disc and opposing surfaces of the inboard and outboard rim parts, and a clamp ring for axially clamping the outboard and inboard rim parts together with the O-ring captured in compression between the disc and the opposing surfaces of the rim parts to seal against air leakage. The disc has an air bleed vent structure outboard of the O-ring and normally sealed from the tire cavity by the O-ring.

  • Patent number: 4640330
Abstract: The present invention is a wheel for vehicles consisting of first and second generally cupshaped, substantially similiar wheel halves each having an integral center section and an integral rim section with a central opening in the center section and a sealing assembly sandwiched between the wheel halves consisting of an inner ring, an outer ring and an O-ring positioned between the two rings, the whole assembly being bolted together so that the O-ring creates a air-tight seal between the central sections of the wheel halves.

  • Patent number: 4574859
Abstract: A multi-piece rim assembly comprises a rim base, sealing member, lock ring and bead seat band. The sealing member and lock ring have specified positions such that each is at least partially disposed in an annular groove in the radially outer surface of the rim base, with the lock ring being nearer to an axial end of the rim base than the sealing member. The bead seat band is coaxial with and slidably mounted around the rim base. When all of the components of the rim assembly are in their specified positions, the bead seat band engages the sealing member to form an airtight seal. If the entire lock ring is not in its specified position, an axial end of the bead seat band contacts the lock ring and prevents the airtight seal from being formed.

  • Patent number: 4481997
Abstract: A safety tire and wheel assembly which includes an improved multiple-piece wheel rim assembly for preventing inflation and/or venting to atmosphere when the rim assembly components are improperly assembled, and an improved safety insert mounted on the wheel rim base for supporting the tire tread during operation following loss of inflation pressure. The wheel rim assembly includes telescoping rim segments and an O-ring normally captured in compression between opposing portions of the rim segments for sealing the tire cavity. Air bleed passages are formed in one rim segment adjacent the sealing ring externally of the cavity to vent the tire cavity to atmosphere when sealing compressive stresses are absent from the O-ring as in the event of improper assembly or disassembly. The safety insert includes a ledge normally disposed within the tire cavity and having a radially facing surface roughened by a circumferential series of axially extending splines.

  • Patent number: 4144922
Abstract: A wheel rim assembly comprising a generally cylindrical rim base and a flange ring including a bead seat retained at one axial end of the rim base by a split locking ring. A T-shaped lug on the flange ring captures the ends of the locking ring in a corresponding groove on the rim base and prevents removal of the locking and flange rings when a tire mounted on the wheel rim is inflated. Circumferential grooves on the inside surface of the tire bead seat cooperate with an annular seal in the rim base to prevent inflation of a tire mounted on the wheel rim when the flange ring and bead seat are improperly positioned thereon.
