  • Patent number: 4551806
Abstract: A method and apparatus for simulating the manner in which a ribbon of known profile is wrapped around a carcass of known profile in accordance with a predetermined winding specification is disclosed. The profile of the ribbon, the profile of the carcass and the winding specification are stored in a memory together with the desired final profile of the ribbon build. The profile of the final ribbon build, which will be created at a selected cross-section of the carcass when the ribbon is wrapped around the carcass in accordance with the winding specification, is calculated. The final ribbon build so calculated is displayed on a video display which also displays the desired final profile so that the profile created by the predetermined winding specification can be compared to the actual profile which will be produced by the winding specification.

Abstract: A method of correcting irregularities in the build-up of a mat during the manufacture of particleboard in which a plurality of individual measurements are taken substantially transverse to the mat as it moves through a measuring station. The measurements take the form of contactless measurements of the distance between a predeterminable measuring plane and the surface profile of the mat. The measured values that are obtained are further processed as representative values of weight per unit area for the positions at which the measurements are taken. The apparatus for effecting the contactless measurements is conveniently either optical apparatus or ultrasonic apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4366019
Abstract: To "set" the relative angular disposition of cords in plural inextensible belts on an inflated green tire carcass before it is cured in a mold, a roller is provided which momentarily presses a belt upon the carcass, thus "printing" the belt thereon at a fixed distance from the longitudinal axis of the carcass, and thereafter releases the belt. The carcass is inflated into a toroidal shape so that a point on the circumference of the carcass is at a predetermined inflated distance from the longitudinal axis of the carcass. The roller is placed on each belt to be "set" so that the roller contacts each belt prior to printing it on the carcass. The roller biases each belt on the carcass toward its (the carcass') longitudinal axis, and it is essential that the distance between the bottom surface of the roller and the longitudinal axis of the inflated carcass is maintained constant while each belt is in contact with the roller.

As the workpiece is advanced linearly beneath a foil applicator roll, an inclined surface on the workpiece will shift the roll in a vertical direction relative to a carriage, from which the roll is biased downwardly. Such roll movement is sensed and causes a force to be applied to the carriage, to move the carriage in a vertical direction so that it "follows" the roll. The carriage movement is limited to an amount sufficient that a pre-established downward biasing force on the roll will be restored, so that the roll pressure on the foil is maintained within an effective printing range. Further, a driving force is applied to the roll and foil that tends to move them faster than the rate at which the workpiece is being advanced.

  • Patent number: 3930922
Abstract: A process monitoring and control system is provided for use in a tire calendering system producing a strip of rubber tire material comprising a layer of tire cord laminated between first and second layers of rubber. In a preferred embodiment, the thickness of the first rubber layer is measured by a single point radiation backscatter gauge at a point prior to its lamination with the tire cord and second layer. The thickness of the first layer is controlled to a desired target by means of a control loop including the single point gauge. The total thickness of the combined layers is measured at the calender output by a total thickness gauge. Gauge coordination means, including a delay means, are provided whereby measurements of the thickness of the first layer and of the combined strip are derived over the same longitudinal portion of the strip.
