    Abstract: A fiber lay-up apparatus and method includes one or more fiber sources from at least one fiber supply wherein a fiber may be fed under tension to provide a pre-stress to the fiber. The fiber lay-up apparatus may include a resin impregnator for impregnating a fiber with a resin. The fiber may be impregnated under pressure to reduce friction, to provide a motive force to move the fiber through the impregnator, or to enhance control over impregnation. The fiber may be shaped by a fiber shaping unit including one or more active or passive shaping members that provide enhanced control over the shape and placement of the fiber as the fiber leaves the fiber lay-up apparatus. A cutting element for cutting a fiber as it is being layed-up may be positioned proximal to the one or more shaping members, and may enable the fiber lay-up apparatus to end the lay-up of one fiber (or set of fibers) and begin the lay-up of a new fiber (or set of fibers) without delay.

    Abstract: A system for accurately and repeatedly pulling a length of plastic fastener tape a predetermined distance. The system comprises an indexing gripper assembly and a stationary gripper assembly, the latter being disposed downstream of the former. The indexing gripper assembly is carried on a carriage that travels back and forth on a linear rail. The rotation of a lead screw is converted into linear displacement of the carriage, the lead screw being driven by a servomotor. While the stationary gripper is open, the indexing gripper grips the fastener tape; then the indexing gripper is advanced a predetermined distance, pulling the fastener tape with it. The stationary gripper is then actuated to grip the fastener tape, following which the indexing gripper is opened and returned to its home position.

    Abstract: A tape and compound dispenser for wall surfaces automatically matches the delivery of the compound to the feed of the tape. The system has a compartment or tank that contains compound. A pump supplies compound from the tank through a flexible conduit to an applicator, which dispenses tape and compound. A sensor measures the rate of speed of the tape as it is being dispensed and provides a signal to a controller. The controller will vary the flow rate by varying the speed of the motor that drives the pump. An auger is rotated within the tank for prefeeding compound to the pump as well as for mixing compound.

Preferably, a microcontroller mounted on a single printed circuit board (PCB) having signal buffering circuitry to control a plurality of individual tensioners is provided. The PCB preferably plugs into a backplane which allows communication between several microcontrollers, thereby allowing the control of at least 32 individual tensioners.

It is also possible to have the apparatus working in accordance with a program prepared in a computer control station.

The moving applicator may take one of any number of various embodiments which include reciprocating movement, rotational movement, pivotal movement and/or linear translational movement for spraying a pattern of adhesive onto the moving string of pocketed coil springs. The adhesive may be dispensed in a plurality of parallel lines from a set of nozzles. The nozzles may be moved and turned on and off under the control of a programmed controller.

    Abstract: For accurately determining, in real time, the collapse of a thermoplastic workpiece processed in a press, such as an ultrasonic welding apparatus or a vibration welding apparatus, a two-phase method is used. In the calibration phase signals are generated which are responsive to the yielding or displacement of the movable press portion relative to the substantially stationary portion arising from forced engagement of the workpiece within the press. The force responsive displacement value is stored.In the subsequent workpiece processing phase, when the workpiece collapses due to the softening and flowing of thermoplastic material as the workpiece is coupled to vibrations, the previously stored force responsive displacement value is recalled as a correction signal and subtracted from the newly obtained displacement signal related to the same force. The result of the subtraction is a true on-line signal indicative of the collapse of the workpiece as it occurs.
