Abstract: An additive fabrication apparatus with an efficient reversal mechanism to reverse the orientation of foil guiding rollers is contemplated. To this end, according to an aspect, a foil guiding system comprising: a flexible foil guiding roller; and a bearing system arranged to bear said guiding roller, said bearing system comprised of end locking elements axially locking to the roller; a bearing arrangement defining a bearing position having the roller curved in bearing engagement. The bearing arrangement engages with an outer face of said roller in a manner so as to thereby flex the roller between at least two bearing positions in conformity with a rolling direction. The flexible roller in connection with the outside bearings replaces a fixed shaft arrangement of the prior art, which is easily tunable to the foil movement direction.

Abstract: Until now, an orientation pattern has been projected onto the skin by means of lasers. The stringers provided with an adhesive film are then positioned by hand on the skin and fixed by pressure weights. A precision of ±3 mm is thus achieved. The fine positioning takes place by means of comb templates. The templates are set one after the other, pressure weights being removed from the stringers after each setting, so a manual orientation of the stringers is made possible. The weights are then set again. The imprecision is still ±1.4 mm. This procedure is very time-consuming and not precise enough. It is therefore proposed to use a gantry robot with a gripper beam to position the stringers, the gantry robot cooperating with a loading unit and a heating station. The time spent is thus substantially reduced and the precision of the product is decisively increased.

Abstract: Unabsorbed infrared laser light that has passed though plastic parts to be welded with a low absorption TTIr process is recirculated back to the low absorption weld interface for reabsorption in the process. A beam of infrared laser light is directed at the plastic parts to be welded, a transmissive first part and an absorptive (or partially absorptive) second part. The infrared laser light impinges the transmissive part and first transits through the transmissive part to be welded to a weld interface at the junction of the two parts. At the weld interface, either the infrared laser light is partially absorbed by an additive infrared absorber, the infrared laser light is partially absorbed by the absorptive part, or both. The portion of the infrared laser light that is not absorbed continues through the absorptive part and exits the far side. This infrared laser light is then redirected back to the weld interface.

Abstract: The invention relates to equipment for carrying out a process for bonding by molecular adhesion of two substrates to one another during which the surfaces of the substrates are placed in close contact and bonding occurs by propagation of a bonding front between the substrates. The invention includes, prior to bonding, a step of modifying the surface state of one or both of the surfaces of the substrates so as to regulate the propagation speed of the bonding front. The surface can be modified by locally or uniformly heating or roughening the surface(s) of the substrate(s).

Abstract: Exposed pipe joints formed of adjacent lengths of corrosion protective coated pipe sections have a protective sheet of synthetic resin material wound about the joint between the adjacent segments of coated pipe. The synthetic resin sheet is deployed from a reel on a coating applicator machine. The pipe joint and adjacent coated pipe sections are initially heated. The sheet of synthetic resin is then wrapped in successive layers over the joint. Pressure is also applied to the sheet material as it is being wrapped. The sheet layers are heated after being applied onto the joint. Wrapping and heating continues during deployment of the sheet material from the reel, and the resin sheet is cylindrically wound over the joint in successive layers until the desired coating thickness is obtained. The successive layers of wrapped sheet material fuse to form an integral protective coating over the pipe joint and the adjacent coated pipe sections.

Abstract: In the case of a process for producing composite material components, thermoplastic prepreg tapes (1) are laid onto a laying surface of a composite material component (2) that is still to be completed, are heated by means of laser radiation (3) and are pressed by means of a pressure-exerting pad (4, 23) of an elastic-flexible material, for example an elastomer. The pressure-exerting pad (4, 23) has a low absorption to the laser radiation (3). This may be achieved, for example, by a translucence of the pad material (6) along with a low absorption coefficient or by a reflective surface. A constant contact pressure is achieved by means of a fluid located in the pressure-exerting pad (4, 23). The internal pressure of the pressure-exerting pad (4, 23) may be controlled to a constant value. Moreover, the pressure-exerting pad (4, 23) may be cooled by means of the fluid.

Abstract: An apparatus for sealing a substrate assembly by applying a force to the assembly while simultaneously exposing the substrate assembly, and in particular a sealing material disposed between two substrates of the substrate assembly, to an irradiating beam of electromagnetic energy. The beam heats, cures and/or melts the sealing material, depending upon the sealing material to form the seal. The force is applied by directing a flow of fluid against the substrate assembly, and beneficially improves contact between the substrates of the substrate assembly and the sealing material during the sealing process, therefore assisting in achieving a hermetic seal between the substrates.
