Abstract: If a plurality of part film webs are each stored on different supply shafts, considerable effort is necessary to use a plurality of part film webs within one apparatus. If the part film webs are stored as a plurality of part film webs on a common supply shaft, various problems can arise. Preferably a plurality of part film webs can be used in an apparatus for the transfer of a transfer layer to a sheet. Ideally, the supply shaft and/or collecting shaft is/are constructed as a friction shaft, so that the transfer of the rotational movement of the friction shaft to the transfer film supply roll and/or transfer film collecting roll is carried out via a frictional connection between shaft and roll, which can be overcome by tensile forces of the transfer film web. Therefore, a plurality of transfer film rolls having different diameters are provided on the friction shaft.

Abstract: Wide ply gaps are intentionally introduced into one or more plies in a radially intermediate zone of the wall of a spirally wound tube. Each ply having wide ply gaps is narrower than the width that would ordinarily be employed at a given spiral winding angle to achieve a butt joint between adjacent edges of consecutive turns of the ply, and the ply is wound at that given spiral winding angle in such a manner that gaps are defined between the adjacent edges of the consecutive turns of the ply. The wide ply gaps have the effect of increasing the compliance of the intermediate zone of the tube wall in the radial direction. Such increased radial compliance has been found to improve the ID stiffness of the tube relative to a tube constructed of the same materials but having no ply gaps in the intermediate zone.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to a multi-layered structure which for a given external geometry a section of interest may be integrally reinforced by varying the relative proportions of the layers in that section. That is, the layers making up the structure may have varying relative proportions to the structure's overall thickness between two or more positions while the structure maintains a constant thickness between the positions. By varying the relative proportions of the structure's layers, the mechanical properties of the structure may be selectively altered from a first position to a second position without altering the structure's external profile. This is especially desirable in composite sandwich structures used in aerospace applications which often require additional reinforcement at structural interfaces.

Abstract: A strip builder for winding a material strip about a rotating core includes a traveling applicator head assembly for receipt of the material strip from an upstream extruder station and transport of the strip to a downstream rotating core. The assembly includes a central support arm in longitudinal travel along the rotating core. Attached to the central support arm is a belt roller, an applicator roller spaced therefrom and a belt drive coupled therebetween. A conveyor belt is wound about the belt roller. Upon rotation of the core, the rotation of the applicator roller rotates the belt roller coupled thereto. Rotation of the belt roller drives the conveyor belt towards the core with the material strip thereon. Upon the belt passing between the belt roller and displaced applicator roller, the strip is stretched and deposited onto the applicator roller for subsequent deposit onto the rotating core. A traveling stitching roller subsequently smoothes the material strip deposited on the rotating core.

Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for making a conduit or pipe. An extruder is provided for producing a strip of continuous thermoplastic. A winding drum receives the strip and helically winds the strip around the drum's perimeter to form a conduit having an inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the drum. The drum includes a core tube surrounded by a plurality of rollers which define the outer diameter of the drum. The rollers rotate to advance the strip around the drum. A plurality of support columns are used to support the roller at each end. A hub assembly is used to movably support the support columns in slidable engagement. The support columns are radially displaced by the hub assembly between two positions, in order to vary the outer diameter of the drum between two diameters.

Abstract: An anode is embedded in an electrolyte layer applied to the surface of a structure such as a pipe section to provide an ionic conductive path between the anode and structure to supply cathodic protection to the structure, where the natural environment may not provide a continuous electrolyte. The anode is comprised of a material normally used as a cathodic protection anode material, such as, an expanded valve metal mesh or ribbon having either an electrochemically active coating or noble metal coating, or a sacrificial anode metal alloy. The anode material is made continuous from one end of the structure to the other and may be connected to a common bus wire from one end to the other. The anode and structure to be protected are connected using wires to a DC power supply that causes cathodic protection current flow to the structure in the case of an impressed current system. No separate power supply is needed in the case of a galvanic or sacrificial anode system.

Abstract: A taping section of a harness making machine comprises a taping device, two conveyors and a bridging conveyor positioned therebetween. The bridging conveyor allows passage of pallets that carry nodes of a harness from the first conveyor to the second conveyor. Once a node has passed over from the first to the second conveyor, the bridging conveyor is vertically removed by the piston rod to allow the taping device to be positioned between the conveyors. The harness is received in a slot of the taping device which tapes the harness whilst it is axially moved by the conveyors until the second pallet reaches the taping device. The taping device is removed, the bridging conveyor inserted and the procedure continues as described above for taping the second section of of harness between the nodes. A simple automated procedure for taping harnesses is thus provided.
