Patent number: 4189337Abstract: A real time system for writing and depositing a label on a cut piece is disclosed. The labeler is positioned relative to the cutting head of a cutting system and moves with the cutting head as a cutting operation proceeds. As the cutting takes place under the direction of the cutting system computer, a label is printed by a printer mechanism and is deposited at the appropriate time for placement on top of the cut part. Printing is by a print head having computer input and control for the indicia printed. Label depositing is effectuated by first stripping the printed label from its backing strip and holding it in place on a vacuum head. The head is lowered to a position inside the cutting head dish. At an appropriate time, the pressure is reversed such that the vacuum dissipates and a positive pressure blows the label off the head downward onto the correct part. The sticky backing on the label holds it in place on the part.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 1978Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Assignee: Camsco, Inc.Inventors: Bobby L. Higgins, Jerry Comer

Patent number: 4017350Abstract: A labelling machine, employing strip which bears pressure-sensitive adhesive labels, is operated by articles conveyed in succession past the machine. Each article moves an arm, thereby advancing the strip by an amount less than the pitch length of the labels to present a partially detached label at applicator rollers, where it adheres to and is detached by the passing article. In this way labelling can be effected at higher rates than previously. In detaching the label, the article also pulls the strip into position for when the next article moves the arm. Guides, relatively movable in one sense by the arm, or by another arm moved by the article, and in the opposite sense by gravity, and consisting of three rollers, or of a rotary cam and a roller, vary the path length of the strip cyclically in the machine by the above amount, thereby advancing the strip and presenting the partially detached label at the applicator.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1975Date of Patent: April 12, 1977Assignee: Pricemaster Ltd.Inventor: James Ernest Thomas

Patent number: 4008119Abstract: A hand-operated device for applying adhesive labels to an object to be labelled. The labels are carried on a backing strip which is moved intermittently around a deflecting edge such that a label is removed from the backing strip at each feed step. A pressure member serves to apply the label so removed to the object to be labelled and the pressure member and deflecting edge are mounted for movement about a fixed pivot during the feed. A pusher member mounted for movement about a fixed pivot transports the label from the deflecting edge to the pressure member while bearing against the adhesive face of the label.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1972Date of Patent: February 15, 1977Inventor: Klaus Dieter Hermann

Patent number: 3985603Abstract: Apparatus for carrying a label having a pressure sensitive adhesive on one side from a first station where the label is printed and partially removed from a strip of backing material to a second, remote station where the label is to be applied to a package includes a belt conveyor extending between the first and second stations. The conveyor moves into direct engaging contact with the label after the label is partially removed from the backing material such that the label is then completely stripped from the backing material and firmly engaged by the conveyor. The conveyor is then driven to move the label to the second station.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1975Date of Patent: October 12, 1976Assignee: Hobart CorporationInventor: George J. Berner

Patent number: 3962021Abstract: A transprinting, bonding or fusing machine having a drum, a pressure roller arranged in contact with the surface thereof, an endless belt passing between the pressure roller and the drum and extending a part way around the surface of the drum, the drum being driven through the pressure roller. Electric heating elements are arranged exterior to the drum surface to direct heat on that part of the endless belt which is in contact with the drum surface, the material to be printed, bonded or fused passing between the endless belt and the surface of the drum.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1974Date of Patent: June 8, 1976Inventor: David Weisfeld

Patent number: 3960642Abstract: Disclosed are three embodiments of a hand-held apparatus for printing and applying pressure sensitive labels. All the embodiments are disclosed as having a housing, a rigid, metal, frame plate mounted by the housing, a platen and a cooperating print head, a delaminator for delaminating printed labels from the web of supporting material on which the labels are carried, an applicator for applying the printed labels, a feed wheel having teeth for engaging and advancing the web, a manually operable actuator drivingly connected to the feed wheel and the print head, a brake, and an ink roll for inking the print head. The apparatus also includes a feed wheel assembly having a feed wheel driven by a pawl and ratchet mechanism. The pawl and ratchet mechanism is adjustably connected to the feed wheel and a rolling contact type one-way clutch prevents loss of tension in the web between the brake and the feed wheel.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1974Date of Patent: June 1, 1976Assignee: Monarch Marking Systems, Inc.Inventors: Paul H. Hamisch, Jr., James A. Makley

Patent number: 3955711Abstract: A dispenser for self-stick labels removably stuck on one side of a flexible carrier strip in a row extending longitudinally along the strip, has a forwarding device for forwardly moving the strip and a strip deflector on which the forwardly moving strip is deflected away from the labels to peel the strip therefrom for dispensing the labels. The forwarding device is positioned ahead of the deflector so that the strip carrying the labels is pushed to the deflector, the latter having a concave surface and being behind the forwarding device and arranged so that the concave surface is engaged by the side of the strip carrying the labels. When the strip is forwarded, it is deflected by sliding downwardly and backwardly in the concave surface so as to peel from the labels, the latter being pushed over the top of the deflector for dispensing. Every label carried by the strip can be dispensed, including those on the front end of the strip.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1974Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Assignee: Heinrich HermannInventors: Carl Schroter, Friedrich Kirchdorfer

Patent number: 3953278Abstract: A device for dispensing and applying stickers by intermittently engaging and advancing a continuous strip carrying said stickers along a path having an abrupt change of direction which causes the stickers to separate from the strip. A mobile clamp intermittently engages the strip and travels a reciprocal path for incrementally advancing the continuous strip to dispense a sticker.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1974Date of Patent: April 27, 1976Assignee: J. Patent number: 3938698Abstract: A machine for transferring adhesive labels from both sides of a single carrier strip to two separate streams of product items on a continuous basis. A pair of spaced continuously rotating vacuum wheels come in contact with opposite sides of the carrier strip, the carrier strip passing around a loop-forming roller adjacent each vacuum wheel to bring the label in contact with the vacuum wheel. Each vacuum wheel has holes around the periphery thereof, a vacuum being applied through the openings in a stationary sector of the vacuum wheel. As each label comes in contact with the associated vacuum wheel, it is pulled off by the vacuum and transported through the sector angle to a release point, where it is transferred to the surface of a product item.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1974Date of Patent: February 17, 1976Assignee: Avery Products CorporationInventors: James E. McDavid, Jr., Stanley E. Truesdell, Elmer Thomas Chipps

Patent number: RE29335Abstract: The present invention relates to a magnetic patch attaching device wherein a continuous roll or reel of adhesively backed magnetic stripes are arranged so that introduction of a document into the machine by means of which the stripe is to be attached permits the reel of tape to be advanced in such manner that an individual stripe is peeled away from the backing tape and applied to the document while the latter is simultaneously withdrawn from the apparatus, the tape being pressure bonded to the surface of the document during withdrawal of the document, leaving the apparatus available for the introduction of the next document.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 1976Date of Patent: August 2, 1977Assignee: Burroughs CorporationInventors: Robert R.
