  • Patent number: 6086697
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for constructing a rotatable label and attaching the rotatable label to a container. The rotatable label includes a release tab releasably attached to an outer label. The release tab is adhered to the container, or to an inner label adhered to the container, to secure the outer label to the container while the outer label is wrapped around the container. The release tab may then be detached from the outer label to permit the outer label to be rotated about the container. Longitudinal movement of the outer label relative to the container may be restricted by disposing the outer label between top and bottom label panels formed on the container. The outer label is preferably adapted with a transparent portion or window permitting viewing of indicia disposed therebehind.

  • Patent number: 6042930
Abstract: A multilayer film useful for making plastic adhesive labels for glass substrates such as glass bottles. The multilayer films contain a base layer, an adhesive layer, and optionally an intermediate layer to improve interlayer bonding between the base layer and the adhesive layer. The adhesive layer comprises a heat-activated thermoplastic adhesive that is not tacky at room temperature. Films of the present invention are sufficiently non blocking at room temperature so as to not require the use of a separate release liner. The film can be utilized in conventional graphics printing operations and made into labels. Labels made from films of the present invention can be thermally adhered to glass substrates and exhibit sufficient adhesion to glass substrates to withstand washing/rinsing, filling, and pasteurization processes utilized in the bottling industry.

  • Patent number: 6042676
Abstract: A heat-transfer label suitable for use on silane-treated glass containers, refundable polyethylene terephthalate containers, and the like. According to one embodiment, the label includes a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene. A skim coat of wax is overcoated onto the polyethylene-coated paper. A protective lacquer layer comprising a polyester, polyester/vinyl or polyester/vinyl with wax lacquer is printed onto the skim coat. An ink design layer comprising one or more polyester inks is printed onto the protective lacquer layer. An adhesive layer comprising a polyester, polyester/vinyl or polyester/vinyl with wax adhesive is printed onto the ink design layer.

  • Patent number: 5800656
Abstract: A heat-transfer label including a phenoxy lacquer layer. In one embodiment, the label is designed for use on silane-treated glass containers of the type that are subjected to pasteurization conditions. The label includes a support portion and a transfer portion, the transfer portion being positioned over the support portion. The support portion includes a sheet of paper overcoated with a release layer of polyethylene. The transfer portion includes an organic solvent-soluble phenoxy protective lacquer layer, an organic solvent-soluble polyester ink layer over the protective lacquer layer, and a water-dispersible acrylic adhesive layer over the ink layer.

  • Patent number: 5628847
Abstract: An improved system for applying labels to pharmaceutical vials or the like includes a heating tunnel assembly having an insulated heating chamber defined by a first stationary portion and a second removable portion, with a heater positioned within the insulated heating chamber. The assembly includes movable mounting structure for mounting the second removable portion of the insulated heating chamber for movement between a first position engaged with the first stationary portion, and a second retracted position remote from said first portion. An actuator is provided for moving the second portion of the insulated heating chamber into its engaged position, while a biasing spring resiliently biases the second removable portion of the chamber toward the retracted position. As a result, the heating tunnel assembly will automatically be opened to prevent products from overheating or burning in the event of an emergency that disables the actuator.

  • Patent number: 5567511
Abstract: A label for containers comprises a foamed polyester film that has a density of less than 1 g/cm.sup.3. The foamed polyester film may be blown away in air and then floated away in water during the recycle process for containers. After separation from the containers the foamed polyester film may be reclaimed by a chemical process to recover raw materials for polyesters.

  • Patent number: 4567919
Abstract: The invention comprises a turret type container-filling machine in which the containers are advanced to and from filling position by a continuous belt and in which the containers are metered into filling position by a pair of parallel screws shaped to engage and hold the container while the filling spout of the filling machine is being lowered to the container mouth. The containers are exited along a curved portion of the track which is canted toward the center of its curvature at an angle such that gravity neutralizes the centrifugal force engendered by the containers traveling that curvature.

  • Patent number: 4097325
Abstract: In a label-applying machine for applying labels adapted to be rendered adhesive by an application of heat, a vacuum picker for removing the labels one at a time from the magazine and moving them to a transfer position, a vacuum gripper finger at the transfer position for taking the labels from the picker and moving them to a position for application to containers supported for movement along a predetermined path, said gripper fingers being heated to render the labels tacky during movement from the transfer position to the containers for spotting the labels on the containers, and wipers situated along the path of travel of the containers beyond the place of spotting of the labels for pressing the labels against the sides of the containers, and means for heating the wipers to cause the labels to be adhesively attached to the containers.
