  • Patent number: 4459920
Abstract: A dual purpose bracket is provided for cooperating with a corner post structure to join adjacent sides of a piece of furniture and to mount a caster-receiving socket. This dual purpose bracket comprises a single strip of substantially flat material formed to define a pair of substantially symmetrical joining portions and a socket-receiving portion intermediate and continuous with these joining portions. Each of the joining portions includes a portion locatable substantially coplanar with one of the adjacent sides to be joined and attachable to one adjacent side and to the corner post. The socket-receiving portion comprises a curved surface projecting inwardly with respect to an imaginary corner defined by the adjacent sides, the curvature thereof being similar to the curvature of at least a portion of the caster-receiving socket to receive the caster-receiving socket inwardly of the corner post.

  • Patent number: 4424604
Abstract: A wheel kit for mobilizing a picnic table and the like, comprising a handle assembly adapted to be attached to a horizontal member for lifting one end of the table and one or two wheel assemblies adapted to be attached to a leg or leg members at the opposite end of the table is disclosed. When the table is lifted by the handle assembly, the wheels of the wheel assemblies serve to move the table over the ground. The assemblies have thin sheet metal bracket members including L-shaped portions and channel-forming rims which are secured to the respective table members by fasteners such as screws and/or nails. Each bracket member has a horizontal part that is interposed between the respective leg end and the ground while the associated horizontal part carries the wheel at a fixed distance from the horizontal part and thus the ground. Thus the wheel is always properly positioned for ground clearance with the table horizontal and ground engagement when tilted.

  • Patent number: 4422212
Abstract: A detachable luggage-supporting, ground-engaging convertible accessory unit comprises a base member and at least one slide member which is guided for sliding movement on the base member. The base member is secured to a piece of luggage. A caster roller device is mounted on one slide member to form a caster roller assembly. A runner skid is connected to another slide member to form a skid-type runner assembly. A cantilever leaf spring on the base member snappingly engages each slide member for interconnecting the base member and the respective slide member with snap-type action. An access opening is formed on each slide member to expose the spring to permit a disassembly tool to remove the slide member from the base member, to thereby effect the rapid interchange of one caster roller assembly for another, or for the skid-type runner assembly. The slide member covers the spring except at the access opening so that the members are not readily detachable during luggage transport.

  • Patent number: 4282628
Abstract: An enclosed axle, inclined wheel caster including a generally disc like pivot support, or body frame member, which may be flat or dished, carrying an axle and a supporting wheel member rotatably mounted on the axle, both of such members being made from stampings, moulding or forgings and a cover formed of opposed saucers, or cupped members, or combinations of these forms, attached to each of the members to give the swivelable caster a generally enclosed form. As an alternative form of the invention, one or both the body frame member and the supporting wheel member may be made as castings, or mouldings each having light weight opposed saucers, cupped, bulged or non-bulged truncated cone forms attached thereto to provide a covering for the body frame and axle of the completed caster.

Abstract: A caster pad permanently attachable to the underside of a receptacle to permit a caster to be quickly mounted to the receptacle by insertion into the caster pad and to be quickly removed from the receptacle by releasing it from the caster pad. In one embodiment, the caster pad employs no specialized parts but instead is formed from a single piece of sheet metal to which standard bolts are affixed for locking the caster into the caster pad. In addition to the bolts, the caster pad consists of a unitary piece of metal whose edges are bent out of the plane of its flat central portion to form flanges which help to retain the caster and which include threaded holes for attaching the bolts.

  • Patent number: 4224714
Abstract: An assembly including a mechanism for retaining a rotatable member, such as a caster, mounted on an elongated member, on a support. The support, such as, for example, the bottom of a sofa, has a bore hole for receiving the elongated member. A planar metal plate having a central opening is secured to the support so that its opening is aligned with the bore hole. A plurality of teeth are struck from the metal plate so as to project outwardly from a side face of the plate. The struck teeth leave a plurality of corresponding slots in the plate. The plate is secured to the support bearing the bore hole. A resilient member having a central opening is positioned between the plate and the support so as to be in alignment with the opening in the plate and the bore hole. When attaching the elongated member, on which the roller is mounted, to the support, the elongated member will pass through the opening in the plate and the resilient member into the bore hole.
