Having Axially Biased Camming Surface Patents (Class 16/303)
  • Patent number: 5027474
Abstract: A concealed self-closing hinge for mounting a door for swinging on a fixed frame. The door member of the hinge includes a cup which is concealed within a pocket formed in the inner side of the door. A durable plastic cam on the arm of the frame member of the hinge receives a hinge pin which is disposed in slots in the cup. A leaf spring is supported by the base of the cup and is bowed around a bridge to bear against and ride on the cam to effect the self-closing action and also to hold the hinge pin assembled in the slots in the cup.

  • Patent number: 4951351
Abstract: An improved automatic door closure is provided for a door which has a door post mounted by two or more members attached to a door jamb. The door closure comprises a roller which is mounted on the door jam, a cam which is mounted on the door post so that it will rotate with the door post but is capable of limited movement relative to the post in an axial direction, and a spring for urging the cam against the roller as the door is swung between open and closed positions. The cam is contoured so as to cause it and the roller to coact with spring arranged to cause the door to return from open to closed position without any operator applied force. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the door closure apparatus comprises a compression spring for urging the door to close, and an adjustable mechanism for varying the force exerted by that spring.

  • Patent number: 4932101
Abstract: A hinge is provided between bodywork and a door of a motor vehicle. A stationary bracket is fixed to an upright of the bodywork and includes a base with a hole. A movable bracket is fixed to the door and a pin connects the stationary and movable brackets. A torsion bar has a wheel/cam follower for engagement with a cam on a connection element. The stationary bracket, torsion bar, cam follower and connection element comprise a sub-assembly and the cam and cam follower are located intermediate the height of the hinge. The movable bracket includes a boss with an opening. Upon linear movement in a direction parallel to the hinge axis, the boss may be disposed about the pin with a connection element and movable bracket cooperable to prevent relative rotation therebetween whereby accurate assembly is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4914781
Abstract: A hinge assembly for pivotally connecting a closure lid to the cabinet of a top loading clothes washing machine and maintaining the lid in a releasable self-sustaining open position and out of contact with the knobs of the machine control panel. The assembly includes an integrally formed first hinge portion for attachment to the cabinet and provided with a base, a curved bearing surface terminating in a landing and a pivotal hub, and a second hinge portion for attachment to the closure lid and provided with a pivot pin disposable within a passageway formed in the hub. A pair of the assemblies are used to secure a closure lid provided with a radiused bearing section to the cabinet.

  • Patent number: 4891862
Abstract: A self-closing hinge comprises a pair of hinge leaves pivotally interconnected by an offset hinge pin. One leaf has a flanged head projecting substantially radially with respect to a sleeve of the other hinge leaf, within which the hinge pin is mounted. The external surface of the sleeve serves as a cam surface against which a follower element carried on the head of the other leaf is biased. The cam follower comprises a tubular spring-steel member oriented parallel to the hinge pin and generates a force through the head of the other leaf along an axis distally offset relative to the axis of the hinge pin. During closing of the hinge the follower is brought into registration with a pocket formed in the sleeve to effect a rocking movement of the follower about one edge of the pocket to generate a self-closing moment.

  • Patent number: 4845810
Abstract: A self closing hinge having a single unitary spring element which functions to maintain the hinge in the open position and to move the hinge to the fully closed position after the hinge is partially closed. A unitary hinge spring having a base section and a ramp section joined by a resilient section which is typically a C shape in cross section.

  • Patent number: 4819299
Abstract: A self-closing hinge comprising a pair of hinge leaves pivotally interconnected by an offset hinge pin. A spring tang is formed integrally with one of the hinge members and has a distal end that has a head projecting substantially radially with respect to a sleeve of the other hinge leaf within which the hinge pin is mounted. The external surface of the sleeve serves as a cam surface against which a follower element carried on the head of the spring tang is biased. The line of force exerted by the head of the tang through the follower is distally offset relative to the axis of the hinge pin. During closing of the hinge the follower is brought into registration with a pocket formed in the sleeve effecting a rocking movement of the follower about one edge of the pocket to generate a self-closing moment.

  • Patent number: 4592529
Abstract: A shock absorbing mechanism for a rearview mirror assembly of a motor vehicle includes a mirror body movable in a horizontal direction with respect to a mounting stay mounted to the motor vehicle in such a manner that the mirror body is initially located at the neutral standing position and is movably supported to be inclined when an external force is applied thereto. The mirror body is automatically returned to the standing position upon removal of the external force or is inclined toward one side of the motor vehicle upon necessity.

  • Patent number: 4494273
Abstract: The swing control hinge disclosed is intended to control the rotational speed of a door that is tending to accelerate toward the strike as a result of spring loaded hinges. The hinge is intended to prevent slamming of the door while allowing enough speed to insure latching. The swing control hinge is housed in a hinge body that may be used as a third hinge. The hinge pin is made up of two cams that have cam parts on them which dissipate energy from conventional spring loaded hinges having helical spring or a block of rubber during the opening cycle of the door and the torsional force from the spring loaded hinges is dissipated in checking the door as it closes to keep the door from slamming.

  • Patent number: 4485522
Abstract: A door-closing hinge comprising an upper barrel with a wing secured to the door and an aligned lower barrel with a wing secured to the door frame. A bolt rotatable in the lower barrel has a non-circular upper end fitting in a non-circular opening in the upper barrel and a lower stem portion of smaller diameter which extends to the lower end of the lower barrel and has in its lower end a central conical depression engaged by a pivot pin in the lower end of the lower barrel. At the upper end of the lower barrel there is a ball bearing between a threaded collar screwed into the upper end of the lower barrel and a washer on the bolt. A sleeve surrounding the bolt has inner pins slidably received in helical grooves in the bolt and outer pins slidably received in longitudinal grooves in the inner surface of the lower barrel so that when the door is swung from closed position toward open position the sleeve is moved upwardly against the force of a spring which tends to return the door to closed position.

  • Patent number: 4389748
Abstract: A new and novel concealed door hinge is disclosed and includes three pivot points, all of which are hidden when the door is closed. The device includes a substantially right angle interior leaf secured to the cabinet and a cup-like external leaf secured within a recess in the door. A forcing member is pivotally connected to one of the surfaces of the interior leaf and a pivoting member is pivotally connected to another surface of the internal leaf and to the external leaf. In one embodiment of the invention, when closing the door, a cam-like structure within the external leaf moves the forcing member to urge the pivoting member toward the door opening and, consequently, causes the entire hinge assembly to close. In another embodiment of the invention, the pivot point between the forcing member and the interior leaf is slidingly positioned with respect to the interior leaf. This embodiment also includes an axle which interconnects the forcing member and the pivoting member.
