The hinged detent design further enables easy vertical axis assembly and provides for one of a multiple of operable angles to be factory-set. In adjustable hinge detents, a dial or similar mechanism can be rotated to adjust and set the desired operable angle to which the hinged product halves will be opened. Locating elements are forcibly disengaged from one set of adjusting recesses in the adjustable hinge, then rotated to different adjusting recesses of the hinge, and finally permitted to reengage the adjustable hinge in the new adjusting recesses. Abstract: A combination step and extension ladder manufactured of prestressed filament wound composite material such as fiberglass is disclosed. The inner and outer side rails are molded, filament wound composite material (fiberglass) wherein the fibers are continuous and angularly oriented with respect to the longitudinal axis of the respective side rails. Hinges are provided on each of the inner side rails of the ladder and hinge actuators are located in the front edges of the outer side rails so that the ladder may be folded, unfolded or locked in either a closed, step ladder or straight extension ladder configuration, by depressing the hinge actuators, irrespective of the longitudinal position of the inner rail sections with respect to the outer rail sections.

  • Patent number: 5887317
Abstract: An adjustable locking hinge for holding a door either completely or partially open. The adjustable locking hinge has an adjustable friction resistance and allows retention of the door at any desired angle. The hinge includes two hinge leaves with knuckles in an intermeshing relationship with each other, and a hinge pin that extends through the knuckles that is axially shiftable to locked and unlocked positions. Two pins extend upwardly from opposite sides of a base element and engage a sprocket plate mounted on the hinge pin, in the locked position. In the locked position, the resistance to move the door is adjusted by an actuating mechanism. A protective cap is removably attached to the base element, and covers the components of the locking mechanism. The protective cap has a central aperture through which the top portion of the actuating mechanism extends. The lower portion of the hinge pin includes an axial bore with an end button press fit therein.

  • Patent number: 5813093
Abstract: A hinge assembly which has a limited number of stable positions and in which the hinge automatically moves to the closest of such stable positions is disclosed. The movement of the hinge is accomplished in one illustrative embodiment by positioning the protrusion on one of a pair of ramps inclined opposite to one another and toward the adjacent recess so that the parts of the hinge rotate relative to one another, moving the protrusion into the adjacent recess. The protrusion is pressed against the ramps and the grooves by a connecting portion that joins the arm portions and is flexed when the hinge parts are assembled so as to bias the arm portions toward one another.

No. 5,381,570 for foldable tubular playpen frames having a step in the tooth of a recessed sprocket portion in which a connecting gear rests. In order to unlock the joint one must move the gear axially inwardly with a pushbutton as well as relieve the stresses on the joint by lifting up the tubular bars connected to the joint so that the gear may slip off the step. In this way an additional factor of safety is built-in in order to unlock the joint, and accidental release is reduced.

  • Patent number: 5408726
Abstract: A locking device for pivotally interconnecting a closure to a support and locking the closure in an open position relative to the support. The interlocking device interconnects the closure and support about a vertical axis, so that the closure can pivot about this axis and open and close relative to the support. The interlocking mechanism includes a locking mechanism having two engageable locking ratchet members. One ratchet member is fixedly coupled to the closure, and the second ratchet member is coupled to the support for movement along the vertical axis. The locking mechanism also has a spring which biases the ratchet members together into engagement with each other. Both ratchet members have compatible teeth with a ramping surface and a stopping surface for limiting the pivotal movement of the closure to a first direction and locking the closure in an open position. The releasing mechanism disengages the ratchet members, which allows the closure to be closed.
