  • Patent number: 11794521
Abstract: An example article of furniture includes a number of furniture legs having mechanically coupled thereto a respective furniture caster having a rolling component. The furniture casters are movable between (i) an extended position in which their rolling components at least partially extend below bottom surfaces of the furniture legs and (ii) a retracted position in which their rolling components are positioned entirely above the bottom surfaces of the furniture legs. Push-pull cables are mechanically coupled to the furniture casters, and at least one actuator is mechanically coupled to the push-pull cables. When actuated, the actuator applies a pushing force to the push-pull cables, thereby causing the furniture casters to transition from the retracted position to the extended position. When the actuator is not actuated, the pushing force is removed from the push-pull cables, thereby causing the furniture casters to transition from the extended position to the retracted position.

  • Patent number: 4621804
Abstract: A therapeutic walker has features which permit its use by persons with varying degrees of disability and is capable of adaptation to be used in different ways as the level of disability diminishes. A walker frame extends substantially around three sides of the region occupied by person using the walker and a removable closure bar is attached across the frame on its open side. An elongated crotch-cradling panel of flexible material is removably attached between the closure bar and the frame on the opposite side of the walker. The person using the walker straddles the crotch-cradling panel which is adjustable in length for persons of different sizes. The legs of the walker are adjustable in height and terminate in removable or retractable casters. A person using the walker can either sit down on the seat or stand up in the walker (with appropriate adjustments being made in the length of the legs).

  • Patent number: 4397062
Abstract: A rotatable roller assembly includes a roller, a housing, a support pivotably connected at one end to the housing for pivotal movement between a first retracted position and a second extended position, the roller being rotatably connected to the other end of the support, first and second notches defined in the support for establishing the first and second positions, respectively, and a locking mechanism slideably movable into and out of locking engagement with the first and second notches to effect releasable locking of the support and thus the roller in the first and second positions, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4108455
Abstract: A cargo pallet incorporates a plurality of pneumatically extendable and retractable roller means disposed in a lower, deck or floor contacting portion thereof. The roller means are arranged in a pattern to provide equitable load distribution such that, when the roller means are extended, the pallet and any cargo thereon may be easily moved in any horizontal direction; and, when the roller means are retracted, the pallet is immobilized with its lower surface resting substantially flush with a cargo-supporting floor, deck or platform. Inherent load-levelling is accomplished since one or more roller means may be partially retracted to accommodate bumps and uneven portions of the floor, deck or platform over which the pallet is to be moved. The conjoint operation of one or more roller means in the foregoing manner also provides a cushioning or load-distributing action for the pallet and its cargo.

  • Patent number: 4103391
Abstract: A wheel unit for being mounted in a suitcase comprises a housing which, when installed, has a rectangular chamber that opens to the outside, within which a wheel is retracted under the force of a spring. The wheel is carried on a wheel bracket which is secured to a bearing block suitably movably retained in the housing. To place the same in use, the wheel is pulled against the force of the spring out of the housing, thus correspondingly moving the wheel bracket and bearing block. Assuming a horizontal wheel axis, the wheel and wheel bracket are turned 90.degree. about a vertical axis, and in this extended position, the wheel bracket is received in locking recesses in the housing.

  • Patent number: 4077086
Abstract: A retractable castor mechanism for attachment to an article of furniture or other heavy object including a castor shank that is rotatably received by a socket of a retaining member. A mainspring biases the retaining member and the castor downwardly, and a latch pin is engageable with the retaining member to latch the castor against the force of the spring in an inoperative retracted position. The latch is operated by a releasing lever having a foot portion that rests against the floor, so that a slight push of the article across the floor causes the latch pin to disengage the retaining member, allowing the castor to descend to an operative position.
