Movement Transverse To Hinge Axis Patents (Class 16/364)
  • Patent number: 5530993
Abstract: A device for holding a flap door to a horizontal open position under a locked condition can reduce any undesired load that may be applied to the flap door when it is unlocked so that the latter can be opened softly and lightly to avoid tear and wear of the related components and prolong the service life. A bracket 6 is rigidly fitted to a cut-out section 5 of the front edge of the top plate 2 of a hollow body 1 and then the inner cylinder 9a of a damper 9 is rigidly secured to the bracket. As the outer sleeve 9b of the damper 9 is rigidly secured to the flap door 18 by way of a slide rail assembly 19, the flap door 18 is turned open as the outer sleeve 9a of the damper 9 is rotated until a roller pin 11 slidably fitted to the bracket 6 and urged forward by a spring 16 comes into engagement with an oblong notch 10 arranged on the outer peripheral surface of the outer sleeve 9b of the damper 9, when the flap door 18 is in the horizontal open position and locked there.

Abstract: An extendable hinge is provided including a hinge base attachable to a vehicle, a panel bracket attachable to a vehicle body panel such as rear gate or trunk lid, and a hinge member pivotally attachable to the hinge base and slideably attachable to the panel bracket. The hinge base and the hinge member include a "camelback" bend for increased strength. The panel bracket is configured with a low profile and the hinge member is configured to slideably receive the panel bracket so that a minimum amount of space is consumed and further so that the panel bracket can be slideably moved within the hinge member from an extended position which facilitates painting to a retracted position which positions the vehicle body panel for optimal aesthetics. Flanges on the hinge member and the panel bracket define integral stops that engage to limit the panel movement at the extended and retracted positions.

The handle works in combination with the channels, the handle comprising two elongated straps proportioned to fit inside the channels, one inside each channel. The pivot is too wide to slide out of the channel and is proportioned with longitudinal dimension about equal to the distance between the bottom of the channel and the lips. The latitudinal dimension, perpendicular to the longitudinal dimension, is shorter than the longitudinal dimension and the intersection of the edges is rounded. The dimensions of the pivot allow sliding of the strap means along the length in the channel and free rotation of the strap out of the channel to the perpendicular position. At the perpendicular, the pivot is restricted from further rotational movement. Further, at this position, movement of the pivot along the channel is restricted.

In the case of thick-wall doors having shutters or ornamental strips mounted thereat, equally in the case of double doors, windows or flap members or similar type structures, especially in the construction and furniture industry, there exists the difficult problem of adjusting the pivoting movement of the door or other structure. Usually, there only can be attained opening angles of the door or other movable structure up to a range of about 180.degree.. The hinge may be a telescoping type which telescopes upon pivoting the original window into an open position. Such telescoping creates a space between the edge of a window and the body of the vehicle. Air flow coming over the top of the vehicle may then be directed through said space and into an area beneath the open window. A latch is provided for locking the second frame to the first frame in the closed position.
