  • Patent number: 6336249
Abstract: An improved plastic elongated hinge having an open spine and being adapted to replace a conventional piano hinge at a significantly reduced cost. The plastic elongated hinge includes at least two spaced apart pivotally pinned connections. The open spine permits the elongated hinge to be produced using substantially less plastic material. The hinge is preferably injection molded, and the pivotal connections are short in order to reduce the throw of the mold pins and thus maximize the production cycle time. An entirely integral snappedly engaging pivot connection is provided when more than two pivot connections are required. The entirely integral snap engagement connections require no moveable mold pins. This further reduces the costs of the hinge. Preferably, the elongated hinge is solvent bonded to plastic hinged members.

  • Patent number: 5499428
Abstract: A flush hinge for pivotally connecting a door to an adjacent wall wherein first and second hinge members are connected by a pintle to move about a pivot axis. The pivot axis is substantially centered in the width dimension of each of the first and second knuckle portions and an inside face of each knuckle portions forms a stop face for the door or wall to position them inside the pivot axis so the ends of the hinge members remain in close proximity as the first hinge member moves. The first and second hinge members have a tongue and groove fitting and stop faces that abut to hold the hinge member in both open and closed positions. In a first embodiment the pivot axis is substantially centered between adjacent edges of the door and walls with an inner face of the hinge being in the same plane as the door and wall to fill a gap therebetween. The first embodiment has a base portion that extends into a hollow wall support and fastens to the inside thereof.

  • Patent number: 5452501
Abstract: A hinge and check assembly for checking the door of a motor vehicle when in the open position. The assembly provides a base having check profiles formed therein to establish predetermined check positions. The assembly also provides a strap that provides a spring biased contact surface for engaging the check profiles formed in the base. The strap is pivotally connected to the base through a pivot pin that defines a hinge axis, and the strap is allowed to rotate with the door of the vehicle about the hinge axis. Upon rotation of the strap, the contact surface follows the check profile and establishes a predetermined check position. The check profiles are perpendicular to the pivot pin, and the contact surfaces are perpendicular to the check profiles so that the check force applied to the pivot pin is in an axial direction. By having the check force applied axially to the pivot pin, deformation and wear to the pivot pin and its associated bushing does not occur.

  • Patent number: 5423149
Abstract: A kit including a full door piano hinge and frame mount for one lateral edge of a door is disclosed. Door edge trim for mounting on the closing side of the door may be optionally employed. While the hinge and frame mount are integral, they are reversible and hence can be positioned on either side of a door prior to mounting in the door jamb and frame. The latch assembly is then applied to either the left or the right-hand side depending upon how the door is hinged and hung. More specifically the hinge is provided with a plurality of holes in one of its leaves which permits the same to be secured to one lateral edge of the door with screws already in place awaiting the placement of the hinge. In one embodiment of the method, taken in conjunction with the door of U.S. Pat. No. 4,311,183, the lateral edge screws are relieved by one to two turns from the hinge side. The hinge leaf mounting surface is provided with keyhole slots which are positioned against the shank of the relieved screw.
