When the doors are opened, the steps on their bushings in the pivoting hinge leaves drop into the indentations in the adjacent fixed hinge leaf and hold the door in position.

The notch in the fence post also supports the non-moving stirrup member of the hinge so as to minimize gate sagging. The simplicity of the hinge design provides a gate hinge that is inexpensive to manufacture and simple to assemble and install.
