Patent number: 4872239Abstract: A mechanical disk-type door closure wherein one end of the closure is connected to a door and the other end is pivotally connected to a door jam such that when the door pivots about its hinge. The closure includes a rod upon which a rack is formed to cause a pinion to rotate in one direction and which is in mesh with a gear so as to move the pinion out of contact with the rack. When the door closes, a spring moves the pinion into engagement with the rack and the pinion turns in a direction to rotate the gear which is subjected braking pressure so as to adjust the resistance to the closing motion of the door.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1988Date of Patent: October 10, 1989Assignee: The Chamberlain Group, Inc.Inventors: Edward H. Ferguson, Kiyoshi Iha

Patent number: 4759099Abstract: This invention relates to a device ensuring automatic closure of pivoting doors and for holding them in open position. The device includes a fixed box mounted on the door (or frame) and supporting a pivoting arm subjected to the action of a return element. A fixed slide rail is mounted on the frame and a connecting element is positioned between the pivoting arm and the slide rail. The connection between the pivoting arm and the slide rail is obtained by way of a sliding rod, retractable inside the arm. The rod is adapted to be blocked automatically when it projects from the arm by a determined length corresponding to a given degree of opening of the door.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1987Date of Patent: July 26, 1988Inventors: Francois Morano, Victor Mouriesse

Patent number: 4686739Abstract: A door closer the closing force of which can be adjusted is provided with a device for indicating the selected closing force. The device used to indicate the prevailing closing force is actuated in dependence on the adjustment of the spring which determines the closing force.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1986Date of Patent: August 18, 1987Assignee: Geze GmbHInventors: Karl Fritsche, Wilhelm Vahs

Patent number: 4675938Abstract: A retraction device for automatically closing a panel, such as a door or window, after the panel has been opened. The retraction device includes a drum, a coiled spring power assembly for driving the drum, a centrifugal brake for controlling the power assembly and the drum to eliminate slamming of the panel during closing, and a gear train transmission assembly to connect the power assembly and the centrifugal brake. In one embodiment, the drum is a spool which carries a cable to connect the panel to the retraction device. In another embodiment, the drum has a rim which frictionally engages a frame supporting the panel. The centrifugal brake is adjustable to take into account a wide range of panel sizes and frictional conditions. This adjustment can be made through an aperture in the device's housing for quick and easy on-site installation. A one-way clutch mechanism is coupled between the power assembly and the brake to actuate the brake only when the panel is being retracted.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1985Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Inventor: Robert L. Bundschuh

Patent number: 4414703Abstract: A door closer and holder has cylinders with pistons therein responsive to the relative swinging motion between a door panel and a door frame. A spring is loaded by door opening and acts against one piston to effect door closing. Various hydraulic passages opening into the cylinders have valves therein to control the door panel opening and closing speed or speeds. One of the valves, electrically operated, allows the door panel to close from a hold-open position.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1981Date of Patent: November 15, 1983Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventors: Raymond H. Schnarr, Richard L. Zunkel

Patent number: 4387482Abstract: A modular door closure system comprises a rack and pinion motor assembly with single action opening 2a mounted in a first case 5a; a similar motor assembly with double action opening mounted in a housing element 5, 6; and a spring and shock absorber restoration drive 4 mounted in a second case 7 that can be assembled with either the first case 5a to constitute a single action door closure 1a, or with the housing element to constitute a double action door closure 1.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1980Date of Patent: June 14, 1983Assignee: Pont-A-Mousson S.A.Inventor: Georges Maublanc

Patent number: 4369545Abstract: A pinion 9 attached to a door meshes with two parallel racks 10, 11 which face each other. A piston 14, connected by rods 29 to a rotatable lever 25 of a restoration assembly 4 which has a return spring 26 and a shock absorber 27, has an L-shaped pivotable hook 21 behind which a pin 12 of one of the two racks catches at the beginning of the opening. At the end of the closing, immobile stop 17 raises hook 21 to free pin 12. The same process occurs with the other rack to open the door in the other direction. The parts assemble in such a way that the door closure is not very thick and can be mounted directly inside a section of the door.Type: GrantFiled: November 10, 1980Date of Patent: January 25, 1983Assignee: Pont-A-Mousson S.A.Inventor: Georges Maublanc

Patent number: 4222147Abstract: Hydraulic door closer apparatus includes means for counter-balancing the bias of a return spring, to either assist in opening the door by reducing the force needed to open, or, in an alternative embodiment and mode of operation, to open the door by over-balancing the bias of the return spring. In the latter mode, a remotely manually operable switch, such as, for example, a so-called palm button, may initiate opening the door.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1978Date of Patent: September 16, 1980Assignee: Reading Door Closer Corp.Inventor: L. Nelson Burnett, Jr.

Patent number: 4160304Abstract: An accessory for use with a conventional door closer having a body for mounting on a hinged door or the door jamb and a spring biased rotatable shaft constantly urging the door toward a closed position. The accessory comprises a first member having a reaction plate fixed with respect to the door closer body, a second member, such as an externally splined ring, fixed with respect to the door closer shaft, and a member, such as a flanged collar, rotatably interconnecting the first and second members. The collar is threaded into a hole in the reaction plate, and has an internally splined hole accommodating and meshing with the splined ring. The force of frictional engagement between the flange and the reaction plate progressively increases as the door is opened, and at an adjustable predetermined open position of the door the frictional resistance between the flange and reaction plate is stronger than the closing force of the door closer, so that the door is held open.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1978Date of Patent: July 10, 1979Assignee: IMC Magnetics Corp.Inventors: Gordon S. Smith, Theodore R. Comstock

Patent number: 3942334Abstract: A power driven ice dispenser in a freezer-refrigerator or the like discharges ice down a chute through the front of the unit. The chute is closed by a spring-loaded door opened by a lever. When the lever is released, an inertia motor delays closing of the door until the chute is emptied of ice.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 1975Date of Patent: March 9, 1976Assignee: Amana Refrigeration, Inc.Inventor: John J. Patent number: 3934307Abstract: An adjustable spring loading mechanism for use in controlling the movement of doors and the like. The mechanism includes a cylinder housing and a piston slideable within the housing. A plurality of biasing means are arranged in the housing in engagement with the piston, and apply individual biasing forces to the piston which cooperate to produce a total resultant biasing force. The biasing means are provided with different effective lengths so as to engage with the piston at different positions in the cylinder and thereby vary the total biasing force.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1974Date of Patent: January 27, 1976Inventors: Thomas R.
