  • Patent number: 9169905
Abstract: A disclosed drive assembly is suitable for driving an actuatable component in a first direction and a second direction. The drive assembly includes a housing and a drive rod. The drive rod selectively extends and retracts to apply a driving force to the actuatable component in a first and a second direction, respectively. The driving force creates a reactive force on the housing. An override assembly includes a spring in communication with the housing. The housing pushes a first end of the spring toward a second end of the spring when the reactive force exceeds a predetermined limit and the drive rod applies the driving force in the first direction. The housing pulls the second end of the spring toward the first end of the spring when the reactive force exceeds the predetermined limit and the drive rod applies the driving force in the second direction.

  • Patent number: 8661616
Abstract: A pneumatic door closer having an arming and latching mechanism that once armed permits a door to be held open by placing it in the desired open position and easily released by opening the door slightly, resetting the arming and latching mechanism permitting the door to be closed. A lever having a flat-profile spring over a substantial portion of its exterior surface is rotated into a position adjacent a latching washer causing the latching washer to canter upon a slight closure of the door, locking the door in an open position. Upon release of the door by further opening the door slightly, the cantered latching washer is released and a recoil spring causes the released latching washer to straighten or become uncantered, permitting a piston rod to move freely relative to the latching mechanism causing the door to close. The single piece lever and external flat-profile spring are easily manufactured and assembled and provides a reliable latching mechanism that can be conveniently operated with one hand.

  • Patent number: 5083342
Abstract: A door closure delay device is provided for connection to a door and a frame, whereby the user may delay the closing of the door by actuating a pneumatic timer which is coupled to a pneumatic or hydraulic door closer. The door closer includes a housing, a shaft extending outwardly from the interior of the housing, and a piston or other means for pressurizing the fluid within the housing. The timer includes a control mechanism for setting the amount of time desired to keep the door open, and a timing valve which is normally open but closes when the timer is actuated. When the door is opened and the pneumatic or hydraulic timer actuated, the door remains open for the selected period of time during which the timing valve prevents fluid pressurized within the housing from escaping, and upon the expiration of the selected time period, the timing valve opens and allows the door to close.

  • Patent number: 4639969
Abstract: This is an improved door closer mechanism for attachment to, or incorporation into, a standard spring type door closer, or for use with a standard spring type door closer. It is particularly useful for screen or storm doors. The unique feature is a reversible pawl and ratchet assembly operating on a rod between the door and door casing, which allows the door to ratchet open freely to any desired position where it is held by the pawl until a slight closing pull or push on the door reverses action of the pawl and allows the door to close freely. While the door is closing or is fully closed, reopening of the door resets the pawl for again holding the door open as desired. Reversing of the pawl is fully automatic, and nothing has to be manually touched except the door itself.

  • Patent number: 4486917
Abstract: A door closer includes a spring-loaded piston forming part of a conventional pneumatic dashpot, which retards the speed of a door during closing, and an elastomeric sleeve which is longitudinally compressed during opening of the door to retard the speed of the door during opening and to apply substantial resistance to further opening movement as the door approaches its fully open position. Closing speed of the door is also initially retarded by the compressed sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4190926
Abstract: A door guard for a swingable door that is mounted in a doorway having a door closer affixed to the doorway permits the door to open beyond the point which would normally be the widest open position allowed by the door closer and slows the rate of movement of the door so as to prevent damage to the door, door closer, or doorway. The door guard includes a flexible resilient arm extending transversely across the inside of the door and connected to the door closer at a point intermediate its ends, said arm is anchored at its inner end to the door and has its outer end releasably attached to the door, and catch means mounted on the door for releasably attaching the outer end of the arm to the door. When a force such as a gust of wind causes the door to fly open, such that the door closer reaches its fully extended position, the outer end of the arm is released by the catch means and the arm flexes to permit the door to continue opening.
