Abstract: A system and method for rapidly and reliably sealing off a selected opening from the passage of smoke, noxious fumes, or contaminated air includes a powered clutch and viscous governor that provides a fail-safe mode of operation. A curtain is positioned in a housing adjacent to an upper limit of an opening such as a hoist access-way. The curtain is wrapped around a spindle that is connected to a spool via two cords. The curtain is held in the housing in a stored configuration by a powered clutch so that upon removal of power, either via a controller or by power loss, the clutch releases the spool allowing the cord to unwind lowering and thus deploying the curtain. A capacitor can be included to prevent inadvertent deployments due to momentary power loss. The speed at which the spool rotates, and correspondingly the curtain deploys, is limited by a viscous governor coupled to the spool.

  • Patent number: 4987942
Abstract: A door structure including a retractable cover which has a rolling up section which is rotated so as to roll up and unroll a portion of the cover. Generally an upper edge of the cover portion is fixedly mounted to a roof portion of a door structure and the lower edge is free. The rolling up section is non-rotatably connected to the cover portion along a center line. Rotation of the rolling up section in one direction rolls up the cover portion and rotation in the other direction unrolls the cover portion. The rolling up section moves up and down respectively with the rolling up and unrolling of the cover portion. The rolling up section can be caused to rotate by toothed wheels at one end engaging with spaced rollers mounted on a framework associated with the cover. The cover portion extends, in a particular arrangement, between two end portions, although only one end portion may be provided.

  • Patent number: 4955421
Abstract: This invention relates to a continuous cord roll up window blind. This continuous cord roll up window blind has an endless cord that engages and causes a sprocket to rotate. The sprocket in turn causes a take up spool to rotate. When the take up spool rotates, a take up cord, which is wrapped around the window covering material, either wraps around or unwraps from the take up spool, depending upon which way the take up spool is rotated. This in turn causes the take up cord to raise or lower the window covering material. A take up cord guide is positioned by the take up cord and, when the window blind is completely rolled down, limits the direction in which the endless cord can be pulled to require that the window blind be rolled up toward the interior surface of the window blind.

  • Patent number: 4623012
Abstract: A capstan based system for pulling and accumulating the pull-cords used to lift hanging window coverings from their bottoms. A cylindrical capstan is supported in bearings so that it is free to rotate and move axially. A splined connection to a holding device permits controlled rotation and locking of the capstan. Each of one or more cords is attached to the capstan by means of a clip which can be easily positioned to adjust the position and length of its cord. As the capstan is turned, the cords wind onto the capstan in a single layer due to the camming action of a specially configured camming surface. The capstan begins to move laterally when sufficient friction has developed between the capstan and the cord which has been wound onto it. This provides space for the cord to wind onto the capstan in a single layer. During unwinding of the cord, a guiding surface, over which the cord moves, pulls the capstan back toward its original position.

  • Patent number: 4518193
Abstract: The top closure of the present invention comprises a flexible sheet member sized to fit in covering relation over a top opening of a box. One edge of the sheet member is attached to the upper edge of one of the box walls. A pair of tracks are each positioned at the opposite ends of the box and an elongated shaft extends between the two tracks. The tracks guide the shaft from an open position adjacent one edge of the box to a closed position adjacent the other upper edge of the box. The flexible sheet member is rolled around the shaft when the shaft is in its open position, and the sheet member unrolls from the shaft as the shaft rolls towards its closed position. When the shaft reaches its closed position, it engages a plurality of flaps which are mounted along the edge of the box. These flaps wrap around the shaft as the shaft rotates, and become attached to the shaft, thereby fastening the shaft to the sidewalls of the box with the tarpaulin in covering relationship over the opening.
